1. Chandler Parsons should have re-signed days ago & this would be impossible 2. Andre Drummond 3. Not enough player options This offseason is a joke

I have been TOLD by player agents that certain players on bird rights have decided to re-sign with their old teams. Yet they still have not re-signed. This is bullshit

I have been TOLD by player agents that certain players on bird rights have decided to re-sign with their old teams. Yet they still have not re-signed. I don't have any player to comment specifically on, but this sort of thing does happen regularly in the NBA. This is apparently why Trey Lyles only signed with the Jazz a few days ago. It's also what the Spurs did with Kawhi Leonard in order to have the cap space to sign Aldridge. If the contract is going to be higher than what the cap hold is, then it makes sense to wait longer to sign that player.

IRL the moratorium allows NBA players to commit without signing. IRL NBA teams sign players before their Bird Rights players sign all the time. Why would it be any different here? The whole cap hold solution implies that bird rights players will be signing after their teams sign other FAs, doesn’t it?

True but a GM shouldn’t be able to hold the league hostage and demand his way just so they’ll bend to his whim to get him to stay. Can’t really appease an ultimatum like that.

Yes but if you know the guy has troubles and that he overstressed over this you should know that he does not actually want to withdraw his offer. At the end, D5 is just a bunch of guys in a forum...

I'm going to back up Alex English on this signing. This was the most controversial signing this year, perhaps since we started the league. Alex wanted to play it right and he even came to the rest of us PAs and we talked it through in the staff section of the site. The rest of us PAs were also torn between Sacramento and Milwaukee, but to be honest we tended to sway towards Sacramento because of Josh's point 2. above (Andre Drummond). Certainly in the future I'm going to do what I can to stop "I'm going to trade <lesser player> just to sign <better player>" giving teams any kind of advantage in the FA process. Walt Frazier beat me in the race for Eric Bledsoe because he "promised" to trade Ricky Rubio before the start of next season, and that's not how Free Agency should operate. We all need to go easy on Alex, and we all need to go easy on Vlade too, the only reason he got so pissed off about the process is because he cares so much about the league and his team, and that's not a bad thing in itself. When I was the only team to drop out the Top 3 in the rookie draft I spent a week being miserable, it's good because it shows we care. However it seems to me Gasol would have signed with Sacramento if not for the last few hours, and certainly not for Vlade withdrawing his offer. I also feel like Vlade crossed the line, no matter how much he cares for his team and the years that go into this league, and that if Gasol had signed with Sacramento now it would be an ugly signing, and just like I want to stop the process of <lesser player leaving to sign better player> helping in Free Agency, I also do not want to reward extreme behaviour. Well done to Alex English and the rest of the Player Agents. They already give up their free time, to work for free, to ensure this league has a future, and this was the right signing.

Should it really be ok for a GM to threaten to quit if they don't get their way? Adam's joke shows exactly what I mean. I was put in the position to ultimately condone that sort of move, or make this controversial choice right here. I have a PM from Vlade where he withdrew his offer. It's very possible Vlade wasn't 100% genuine, but what should I be doing besides basing my decision on the things you guys tell me? I didn't make this decision without outside feedback and it's very unfortunate because there probably isn't a right thing to do here. But this is the way it went.

Yea I agree with Ian Noble that we need to watch signing players to teams that are promising to trade other players to accomodate the signing. That can potentially lead to other problems down the road. I don't want to harp on the Bledsoe signing and I trust that Walt is going to trade Rubio, but what if he doesnt? Then what happens? Seems like that just creates a whole other situation that potentially has to be dealt with. Things like that do happen in real life though so maybe we want some of that here too, I don't know. Also, with the Bledsoe signing, Minnesota was negotiating with money they didn't techinically have until they traded Nic Batum for Demare Carroll 20 mins before the signing was officially posted. I think moving forward if a team doesn't have the cap space at the exact moment of negotiation then they shouldn't be allowed to offer that contract. Im not trying to pick on Walt or anything, but the Bledsoe signing just happened to contain all these elements.

I think teams IRL do that all the time – negotiate with cap they don’t have at the moment.

1. Benefit of bitching about hard cap and then benefiting off the rule change check 2. Benefit of not full 3 year bird rights rule before Ian perma installed them to resign one of his players check 3. Waited conveniently for his free agent to return to his team before releasing his free agent signings to other team check. Definitely no agenda there, just pure coincidence it happened. Definitely not douchebaggery not at all guys it just happen to happen accidentally.

On another note, the Bucks are going to be tough next season!
Still have Drummond to potentially trade as well. Things looking good in Milwaukee for the future!

Honestly, this signing is complete ludicrous. Barber's main point is point 2. Andre fucking Drummond is on the team. He could easily be considered a top 5 center in the league and we allow another top 5 center to sign on the same team? This is complete idiocy.
You mention, "Certainly in the future I'm going to do what I can to stop "I'm going to trade <lesser player> just to sign <better player>" giving teams any kind of advantage in the FA process". My question: why the fuck don't we just start right now with this signing? This seems like a poor excuse to say you are going to do it in the future. You aren't even making Glen trade away Drummond as a condition.
I didn't give Vlade any notice because I thought there was no way in hell the PA would allow Gasol to sign with the Bucks with the roster they have. This has really pinched a nerve and has me contemplating the legitimacy of the league. Almost seems like a close group of guys are playing with collusion in a sense. I just don't like what I am seeing here.

Just wanna say that I don’t really disagree with this signingat all. It makes perfect sense. The Bucks had the cap space to afford a big name player. And who wouldn’t wanna team up with AD on a team that already has Teague, Beal, and potentially Parsons. Sure, MIL had Drummond. But Gasol > Drummond. Obviously Gasol is going to replace Drummond. Teams sign the best player available all the time. Drummond is a good young prospect, but if the IRL Pelicans offered a huge contract to the star centers of the league, no player is going to turn down the chance to play with AD just because Asik is there!
I will say though that it sometimes feels like there is some merit to the “close group of guys” thing. Especially with what Vlade said in the chat log and in the group chat last night…

Asik is NOT Andre Drummond... Like, bruuh. Not even relevant my point still stands. Plus Drummond is pretty overrated. Hes still super young, cant hit free throws for shit, and isnt that great of a rim protector for his size and athleticism.

Simmer down y'all. He withdrew his offer because he was pissed that this would most likely happen even if he stayed. The whole thing seems suspicious. I would bet over half the league would vote against this signing if it came down to it. Just because the bucks have a good team doesn't mean MArc automatically signs there. Gasol stayed on a team that essentially has Conley and some other role players.

Im not trying to pick on Walt or anything, but the Bledsoe signing just happened to contain all these elements. I don't think you're picking on me but want to respond anyway. #1 - I think it's entirely realistic for a team to trade away a competing player in order to sign a better player. Why wouldn't you want the better player? If the better player wants the less-good player off the team for any reason, I'll do it to make my team better. #2 - If I don't trade Rubio, then Bledsoe is going to opt out of his Player Option most likely. Almost certainly. So I'd fuck myself over double because Rubio would know I tried to replace him and Bledsoe would also leave. I'm not an idiot, Rubio will be traded, relax. #3 - I did have the cap space actually. If I had to, I was going to renounce my BR's on Favors, thus clearing off his Cap Hold and voila, I had cap to bring Bledsoe to Minnesota. That was how I originally approached the Bledsoe signing, letting him know right away that I could create the cap needed to sign him if he was interested in playing with Jahlil Okafor, Nic Batum, Victor Oladipo, and WCS (etc.) Eventually, talks progressed and it seemed he was indeed interested in joining my team. I got excited. Josh Barber found out I was trying to clear cap possibly (not sure who told him but I guess that's for another day) and offered Carroll for Batum. I asked Colangelo if me clearing out Batum, letting me more easily keep Favors AND have room to sign Eric would be the cinching factor. He basically said yes, except I'd have to deal Rubio. Anyway, I did have the cap to offer, I would have chosen Bledsoe over Favors since I just drafted two really exciting young big-men and the league as a whole doesn't like Ricky Rubio so I'm tired of arguing about his ratings with you A-Holes! :-)

Toney Allen is the grindfather. Memphis has a solid defensive identity. Gasol went to High School in Tennessee. Of course he re-signed. Totally unrelated to this decision.

Walt, I was unaware that you could denounce BRs thus removing the cap hold for Favors. In regards to the Bledsoe situation you would have had the cap space like you said. But I think the point I was trying to make could still potentially happen at some point.
For the record Im against it but if things like that are allowed then I will adjust accordingly. Im also not stressing about you trading Rubio, so no need for me to relax. Again I was using your situation as a discussion point, nothing more than that.
I just want to know how things like that are going to be handled moving forward and then I will adjust to to what is decided. Its not a huge deal just thought it could use some discussion
