The Long Haul - What Did Boston Receive for their Big Three?
It's been 3 long years since the Boston Celtics rebuild began and there's only one draft pick left to make before the team finally starts to look upwards instead of down.
When all the creases have been ironed out the Celtics received a total of 12 Draft Picks in exchange for their 2012 championship winning squad whilst simultaneously boosting the value of their own 3 Draft Picks that they themselves held - one of which, 2015 #4, was traded along the way.
* Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce
* Rajon Rondo (& BOS 2015 1st - #4 Justise Winslow)
* Ray Allen & Brandon Bass
Boston's Own Picks
It's been a tumultuous Process for the Celtics, filled with some initial strings of terrible luck, but eventuating with the leap from #9 to #1 in 2016 that may have tripled church-going numbers in the city of Boston as fans once again became believers!
It's also been a highly personal journey for your's truly, filled with endless, endless, ENDLESS hours of trade negotiations and college film scouting, one which I will miss but which I would not have done differently.
It's time to take this team to the next stage, it's time to look ahead to more wins, more success and maybe if the stars align - more championship banners in the rafters!

The Rebuild began just after midnight on the 12th July 2013 when team captain Paul Pierce, together with the legendary Kevin Garnett were shipped to Cleveland for what would become the three players listed below. The move mirrored Danny Ainge's real-life trade with the Nets, although unfortunately Boston was not negotiating with Mikhail Prokhorov and Billy King!
So far the impact of the players received is much less impressive than the calibre of Garnett's and Pierce's careers. McLemore continues to disappoint for the Kings, Grant's role was minimal for New York and Embiid is yet to play a game, but the upside and the hope is still there that the trio received can put it together some day soon! McLemore's requesting a trade from the Kings, Grant's been moved to a rebuilding Bulls team and Joel Embiid might just win 2017 Rookie of the Year if he can stay on two feet long enough!
TOR 2013 1st - #2 Ben McLemore
ORL 2014 1st - #3 Joel Embiid
SAS 2015 1st - #9 Jerian Grant
* Rajon Rondo (& BOS 2015 1st - #4 Justise Winslow)
It's not hard to see why Celtics GM Ian Noble labels this as his "greatest trade"; when all the subsequent trades are ironed out there's a full 8 picks, two-thirds of the Celtic Rebuild total, that came from what was eventually two players: Celtic veteran Rajon Rondo (7) garnered almost all the picks but Justise Winslow (1) was picked using Boston's 2015 #4 by the Utah Jazz after he left in the trade that brought Jabari Parker to Boston.
The haul is impressive, not least because there's a #1 and #2 in there, but there's also a #13 and a future pick still to come. The real core of any success that might come in the future for Boston can be attributed almost solely to this trade which came a full seven months after KG and PP left town.
HOU 2014 1st - #2 Jabari Parker
IND 2014 1st - #16 Adreian Payne
DAL 2014 1st - #22 Shabazz Napier
BKN 2015 1st - #16 Sam Dekker
CHI 2015 1st - #26 Montrezl Harrell
IND 2016 1st - #1 Ben Simmons
SAC 2016 1st - #13 ?
SAC 2018 1st - #?? ?
* Ray Allen & Brandon Bass
The afterglow came as Boston sought to obtain a first round pick whilst also increasing the value of their own (by losing games!). Allen and Bass made way and the pickup, Philly's Jerami Grant, is looking like he might be a bit of a steal!
TOR 2014 1st - #27 Jerami Grant
Boston's Own Picks
Last but not least are the picks that increased in value as the losses piled up for the franchise. Dante Exum did not disappoint but did underwhelm in his rookie year which was followed by a torn ACL and the hope of a stronger return in 2016/17! Jaylen Brown, the real-life Celtics own pick in 2016, will also have plenty of room to impress.
BOS 2014 1st - #4 Dante Exum
BOS 2016 1st - #4 Jaylen Brown
BOS 2017 1st - ?
