Bird Rights Changes 2023Starting this July teams will possess the Bird Rights to a player: - if that player's contract was originally 3 years or more in duration when it began or
- if that player has been with the re-signing team for three years or more and not been traded.
The rule change is retroactive and it means that if you trade for an expiring player before the end of the season, or traded for a player in the past who had less than three years remaining on their contract, you will possess that player's Bird Rights so long as the player satisfies one of the two conditions above. For example: in this trade from April 2022 the Grizzlies received Rudy Gobert who only had two years left on his contract when he arrived, but since Gobert was on a five year deal Memphis will possess Gobert's Bird Rights this off season.
