Alex EnglishMaybe you can try sitting one of your top guys for at least two games. I think when you bench one of your top-rated guys, the primacy adjusts in a way.. I notice that when I bench Tony Allen... After becoming the most use bench player in my team, he settled in as the 3rd most use beyond J. Green and Stuckey when I put him back..

The impression that I’ve gotten from Ian and Walt and just reading this thread is that we don’t really know what the individual ratings do – we have Aware, FG, Inside scoring, 3PT, and Dunking. So we have essentially 5 categories that the RC is charged with balancing to try and represent the real-life skills of a player. The actual individual talents of players are not so simple. So even if we were aware of exactly what “FG” represented (is it shooting, scoring in general, number of shots?) or how “Inside scoring” affected guards and bigs differently (does it? is it post scoring? Is it layups?), we would still struggle to perfectly represent players simply by manipulating 5 numbers. FWIW In my efforts to do this RC job as well as I can, I've attempted to research these things a few times. From what I can gather, or at least, the understanding I'm using to operate, generally: FG is for 2pt shots. That would generally be outside of the paint and inside the 3pt line. Inside is for post moves. Actual skilled moves that help players score from the inside. Dunk is best described as a finisher. It would actually apply to layups and dunks. It may also (or, alternatively, depending on the different research and sites I've visited at any one time) simply be tied to highlight-reel dunks. A 60 Dunk may flush it every time but a 99 may flush it like 25 year old Vince Carter every time. This is the one, (and then by default, Inside), that gives me the most trouble. If it's simply highlight reel dunks then I start to only look at Inside and almost ignore the Dunk rating. If Dunk is tied to skill finishing inside, then I'd give most people pretty high Dunk but really mess with Inside. 3PT is something that it looks like I've generally gotten right from the very beginning. 70 gives you about a 33%. 80 gives you about a 36-37%. 90 puts you around 40%. Aware is supposed to basically allow the player to use his skills more wisely. Imagine the same set of offensive ratings, but a player with a 99 aware will know that he should shoot more 3's and less 2's, while a player with a 60 aware may do the opposite. FG - 55 3pt - 90 Inside - 70 Dunk - 75 Aware - 60 or 99 Its kind of a weird stat, but I think if the player is an offensive player, we just keep his O-Aware basically really close to his OVR Rating. If it's Roberson, maybe he should have a 45 o aware but like 95 DAware even though he's only a 74 or whatever in our game. This is generally my thought process over at least the last few months of changes. Just putting it out there.

I'd be interested in doing more testing for each skill Walt Frazier. If I can identify at least a rough correlation of what-affects-what, I'd be interested to see the results. Then again I could devote that time to better things probably lol

I've said this exact thing in this thread too. I agree, Harden's biggest strength can't be brought into D5 effectively because there are no ratings for getting to the line. So what do we do about it? There is no obvious answer. Pay Ian so he can quit his job and build a website and sim engine for us full time! Ian you should start a Kickstarter Bloody hell I wish!

The thing about Alex's case, if Harden does average real life numbers, then Wall or Aldridge or Lopez, won't be averaging real life numbers, then you have to adjust those.
Alex's problem is he has a lineup of 4 All-Stars and is expecting a ball dominant point guard to be putting up the same numbers as real life in the sim while he is playing the wing.
The Rockets IRL literally have 0 driving threats besides Harden. No one is afraid of Gordon taking you off the dribble, or Ariza. So the court is spread out. And Harden drives in to a semi-empty paint, or kicks it.
You're never going to obtain this result with the players he has on his team. He has 2 post threats, plays Harden at the wing, and John Wall and Afflalo, while good, aren't the 3 point specialists Gordon and Ariza are.

And Honestly, Ian, you're the commissioner. If you were to instruct the RC to adjust ratings when editing a player to achieve the desired result of attaining real life similarities, I would follow it.
I am most upset that you tested different ratings out during games in here that count. That's falsifying results, important results.
It would be a lot different, imo, if you simmed the 12 seasons off the books, recorded the results, and then gave the RC instructions to edit once and only once.
Consistently changing it throughout the year like this could give a team a win when they should have had a loss, and put them into the playoffs or out of ping pong balls.

Kinda what we're doing right now I guess, discussing it in the RC section so we achieve what's best. For what it's worth, to whichever GMs are still reading this, I only bumped Harden and Westbrook's FG/3PT ratings for like two sim days before this discussion started and I reset them back when you guys voiced your concerns. You guys were right, I shouldn't have bumped them without discussion beforehand, I was anxious to get it sorted out and jumped the gun. And now Harden, at least, is performing perfectly accurately in today's game against Toronto despite his ratings being reset back to where they were. Go figure. The sim engine moves in mysterious ways.

We forgive you Ian! You're still the best commissioner ever.
