Your salary cap doesn't matter when you're signing rookies. Teams over the cap are not affected.

Wow thats freaking dumb. So they get to be unrestricted free agents who can just walk the hell off because you have no freaking rights after a player option. Just make them 4 years long.

Huh? You'll still get bird rights. They'll have been on your team for 4 years. The best rookies can just opt out if they are stars already and know their worth a ton more.

Restriced Rookies > Rookies with 5 years contracts > Rookies with 4 years contracts > Rookies with 4 years contracts + 5th year PO.

There are no extensions and bird rights are fragile at best in this league you basically just took everyone's rookies and said screw the team that drafts them. Player options mean that if they decline it (which every half decent player will) they will be unrestricted free agents and then they just leave and go all over.

So rookie project players are worthless, Kristaaps should go 30th overall because by the time he starts getting good he's just gonna leave your team anyways.

Why do you always drop these dumb rules right before the biggest parts of the season. Just make the contract 4 years. That was always the answer to too long of contracts. Player options don't save guys like DeMare Caroll from being underpaid, he was only underpaid THIS YEAR. Surprise surprise in a contract year. If someone is smart enough to draft a player that was taken RL 2nd round in the first round to keep them longer at a cheap price they shouldn't be punished.

Cut a year off the rookies after like 15 like in real life. That really solves the issue. Anthony Davis is gonna have a rookie contract in real life that is really favorable to the team. Why shouldn't the person in D5 get rewarded for making the right pick.

We've never had restricted free agency, so it's not really a change in that aspect. But I do agree restricted free agency would be best.

That's not true at all, especially in the case of players on rookie contracts because of how underpaid they can be. Lebron James has opted out of his contract, it's almost guaranteed he'll re-sign. Kevin Love opted out of his contract, the Cavs are the favourite to retain him. Brook Lopez opted out of his contract, he's expected to stay in Brooklyn.

I assume the 5 years contract was introduced to prevent extra work with restricted FAs.
If you make that 5th year a player option, I believe you are actually adding extra complication.

I mean, you could give restricted rights to players coming off a rookie contract with bird rights only. The hardest part is to keep track of players with bird rights. Indicating what players are under the rookie contract sounds easy. And the FA process would be exactly the same, only that teams would have the right to match an offer if the player decides to sign elsewhere. Qualifying offers could be avoided to make things easier.

Those players are both 9+ year vets and this year is a weird situation. And also real life where teams aren't offering absurd contracts to role players.

If they opt in it means they are probably terrible. No thats exactly what it will mean. 100%. No player opts in after even an above average season, ever. Because you always go for the longer more secure contract.

If anything you take players drafted out of the lottery and take a year off their deals.

I agree. But where is the connection between this and them leaving their current team? That's the part of your argument that makes no sense to me. Players opt out primarily for financial reasons. It in no way has to be a statement on their wishes to leave the team their playing with.

Timofey Mozgov opted out here, for example, because he is being criminally underpaid. He could easily re-sign with the Kings though. In this specific example that may not happen with Marc Gasol there (as of right now at least), but it's an easy possibility to see happen (if they lose Gasol in FA), even though Mozgov opted out of his contract with the Kings.

Why should the Kings (In this example) be punished for drafting a good player in the later rounds? If players could just leave their rookie contracts then Kosta Koufas leaves the real life Grizzlies early (keeping them from having that awesome 3 man rotation). Half the Houston Rockets PFs leave. The real life Kings players just leave in general because they don't want to be in Sacramento. The real life Cavs would lose Mosgov and Shumpert this season, which would mean the Cavs would end up losing Kevin Love probably. And then LBJ looks at that no depth team and he's out too. 
Most of the depth in the league comes from old guys or  players who are on the last or 2nd to last year of their rookie contracts that are stuck behind other guys.


The situation you put drafters into in D5 is that they lose their players if they are good. And you are forced to keep a guy one more year if he sucks.

Player agents need to stop letting decent/good players sign minimum deals just because they have no other offers (they can just go play in China). We need to establish a veterans minumum.
