Lakers Trade:
76 Arron Afflalo $7,750,000 $7,750,000 $7,937,500 77 Gerald Green $2,750,000 $3,000,000 $3,250,000 $3,500,000
Spurs Trade:
77 Charlie Villanueva $8,580,000 75 Quentin Richardson $2,808,600 2016 First Spurs
The Spurs accept. We need guards and it looks like we won't be getting much from FA. We are though hoping for one building block from FA to sign. Lakers get expirings and a future first rounder...

both of us have opposite needs
I need expirings, more bigs, and more young talented players (in other words DRAFT PICKS)
This trade fills all 3
1. young player (draft pick) = CHECK 2. need more bigs and less guards (Charlie V) = CHECK 3. expiring contracts (charlie v and Q rich) = CHECK
I accept.

Are you allowed to trade your 1st round pick JR? You already moved your 14' and 15' 1st rounders. Don't think you can trade three consecutive first round picks.

I have a 2014 and 2016 first. I can trade one. Keeping my 2014. Not mine but it doesn't matter it's a first.

I was under the assumption that it needs to be your own first round pick for that to work.

The rule was always that you had to keep at least a first rounder. Before this past season I had none. That was because I traded mine for my championship run before the rule went into effect. I picked up one during the draft or before and now that I am allowed to trade all but one I have the 2014 LAL and my 2016. Im trying to rebuild and it looks as this may be the only way. I get a decent young guard in Affalo and another in Green. FA hasn't been good to us so far because we are rebuilding and only have the MLE. The same will prob happen next season so trading my future #1 in 2016 is a smart move to bring in the position we needed most in a guard. One more move and I believe with the little cap we have next season and the 2014 #1 LAL next season we may get a few younger guys to sign next season and continue to rebuild and get better.

This bit of the rule means that only two first rounders can be traded. A team like my Celtics owns all three: 2014 1st, 2015 1st and 2016 1st. Brooklyn has traded his 2014 and 2015 1st rounders, so he's traded "two of the three" first round picks that are his.

The rule has always been your own 1st Rounders, it was implemented after some teams (Toronto and San Antonio spring to mind) had traded away all three.
Sorry SAS, trade is illegal.

The rule states:
Trading of draft picks is allowed up to a maximum of three years in the future. Only two of the three first round picks may be traded*.
Its was never a rule that it had to be your own.

that was never the rule ian. maybe u decided to change it but from the get go it was not.
so I guess its legal to give up my 2014 LAL which is the better pick and keep a first 2 years down the road???
makes no damn sense...

[/li][li] Trading of draft picks is allowed up to a maximum of three years in the future. Only two of the three first round picks may be traded.
GMs may no longer trade all of their draft picks away. Only two of the three first rounders may be traded from now on.
--From Ian
In no way did anything state that it had to be a GMs own team #1 pick....
Just one #1 had to be kept...

I posted a big long thing, but my computed messed up and it deleted. Therefore, I am going to go through the high lights. You can never predict how a draft pick will turn out JR, look at the following trades: dynasty5ive.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=acceptedtrades&action=display&thread=970 - I ended up trying for that pick again in the trade with MIN that involved the 7th pick for the 12th and 14th (NOH) pick. dynasty5ive.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=acceptedtrades&action=display&thread=587 - The trade turns into Cousins for Ibaka, Lillard (TOR 2012 1st), and Giannis Adetokunbo (NOH 2013 1st) Thus, I really like the rule but think that Ian should add the adjective "original" picks to the language in order to make it more clear. Also, I really think you can get a better deal than this. I know "let you run your team", but I am being honest bud.

We will get the trade done. I just think the rule is dumb. One because it shouldn't matter as long as you have a pick. And two because there's no such rule in the NBA.
But we will get a trade done because I want those two... Sometime today:)

Actually the NBA has the "Ted Stepien" rule which says two consecutive future 1sts can't be traded. www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q86edit: I guess it's also interesting to note this part since it applies to a situation like this.
