DYNASTY FIVE MOST VALUABLE PLAYER 2022
JOEL EMBIID
Boston Celtics
It seems like everything came together this season for Joel Embiid and the D5 Celtics and the cherry on top can now be handed to Jojo after two rounds of extremely close league-wide voting (1, 2) eventually saw him pitted against his own teammate, Lebron James, only to win the coveted prize by a single vote!
The fact that the two other frontrunners were Kevin Durant and Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors showcased just a microcosm of what became the ongoing dominant theme of the 2021/22 season - that of the "two great houses", Boston and Golden State, towering over the rest of the competition until the final epic Game 7 battle which could have so easily gone the other way and written a different chapter in D5 history.
2022 represented a culmination of the Embiid era Celtics after a 9-year-long rebuilding Process that started with the departure of Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce in mid 2013! One summer later Embiid would be the 3rd pick in the 2014 Draft, spending the next two years injured, and the following six years as the spearhead of the Boston Celtics war machine.
Embiid finished the season 12th in scoring, 8th in rebounding, 7th in blocks and somehow 3rd in steals, not to mention the sim engine somehow allowing him Steph Curry shooting splits of 52/48/82!? In real life Jojo was the first center since Shaq to lead the league in scoring, somehow dropping 30.6ppg, and finished a close second behind Nikola Jokic for MVP. Jokic himself, unable to lead the D5 Grizzlies further than his real-life Nuggets despite the presence of Donovan Mitchell and Karl Anthony-Towns, alas doesn't feature among this year's contenders but may very well do so next year as his tenure in Brooklyn restarts.
Today clearly marks the apex of Joel Embiid's D5 career, just as this year's championship marked the apex of the Embiid-era-Celtics, a high flash of achievement and dominance for a player who has always had the clock ticking on how long his body can withstand the rigors of NBA basketball. Jojo's pairing with Lebron evokes memories perhaps of a young Magic Johnson's teaming up with NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, with their strong supporting casts of Jaylen Brown and Jamal Murray comparable to James Worthy and the other showtime Lakers. The question is how long the peak will last? when will the wave roll back? Will the D5 Celtics and Joel Embiid begin to fade sooner rather than later? Or is there a few more championships left in their future?
Congratulations to Joel Embiid, 2022 Dynasty Five Most Valuable Player!
