I actually voted Ian Noble for unluckiest. Y'all see his injury history?! damn I don't see how Ian or Jeremiah were "lucky"? They both drafted and traded well. That's not luck. Mullins has traded solidly as well but did inherit a team with some damn good talent on it that simply developed into a monster. He's made moves but I think he started with the best team to start with when we started the league, basically. Love you all though, this is a fun thing.

I actually voted Ian Noble for unluckiest. Y'all see his injury history?! damn Cheers bro Interestingly in retrospect Joel Embiid getting injured was the greatest thing for my rebuild. Imagine if he was playing those two years - he'd atleast be rated an 80ish as he improved, which would've killed my tank. Jabari Parker as well! As a result my own pick was in the Top 4 for two extra years than was likely and I got Jaylen Brown and Brandon Ingram indirectly as a result. Adding to that: whilst on paper my team looks like being the best in 5 years time, I'm never satisfied because it's a fragile position to occupy. Anything at all can happen in 5 years. Teams like Chicago are the most comfortable because their four star players have a history of being healthy as well as dominant, just not healthy this year it seems!

It's a fair point you two make, but I still wouldn't call your top pick being SUUUUPER injury-prone to start his career (as a huge human being having any lower-body injuries being a huge red flag as well) exactly "lucky", but yes it has some upside if you are looking to tank for 4 years instead of 2...

And again to some extent, Ian has to then pick the good players and not the busts or the ones that take 5 years to develop with those high picks. Not "luck" in my eyes.

I think I am a pretty unlucky gm based on the fact I got a team owned by dan majerle after he ran it into the ground. Also Kuzma for ROTY. How did Simmons get more votes

Real life I think Mitchell should get it. the Mitchell vs Simmons debate has further entrenched my offhand theory that American players receive subtle but nevertheless preferential treatment compared to international!

The Embiid injury history plus Jeremiah being in my opinion the front runner to nab Giannis IF he does walk in FA was the reason Memphis got my vote for 2 and 5 years away. (2 might be a stretch but im drinking the Memphis kool-aid). On a side note thank you to the two teams who voted for me as the team you would swap rosters with, I assume you meant to hit Boston which was one option lower then mine but i'll fucking take it none the less.

the Mitchell vs Simmons debate has further entrenched my offhand theory that American players receive subtle but nevertheless preferential treatment compared to international! How do you figure? Love to hear this one. I haven't put any time into thinking about it properly so I'm hesitant to even mention it since it's basically a lowkey conspiracy theory. But I put a lot of effort into comparing and contrasting players and situations to help my D5 team etc. To the extent that I know a player drafted by Orlando or Sacramento has a much worse chance of developing than a player drafted by Boston or Golden State, for example. That's not a conspiracy theory that's just analysis. This is the same thing - every now and again when I struggle to see why something has occurred (like Mitchell > Simmons) it's just a tendency I've noticed that American players receive that "subtle but nevertheless preferential" treatment, sometimes on a small scale like Rookie of the Year consideration, but possibly extended to whether a player is more or less likely for their careers to blossom into stardom, or for a player to remain underrated by media and fans etc.

I can see where you are coming from. I think it is because there are less international players in each draft class. Usually the international players going into the NBA are drafted higher, so it is more noticeable when they are a bust.

B Played NCAA bball in the US so no such biasis would really develop imo. I just think what Mitchell has done is more impressive in the west. It's why I'm also obnoxiously impressed with what Lillard and crew have accomplished. If you wanna talk general bias against foreign players I'd agree. But this case it's nothing to do with that.

Also in this case, Simmons is the #1 Pick guy. He's "supposed" to do this. Mitchell is "more impressive" on a relative and expectation-based level.

Fair enough re: Simmons not being a rookie: Malcolm Brogdon won the award last year as a 24 year old. Ben Simmons is 21 and only 3 months older than Donovan Mitchell. Who's had the more experience? Simmons who sat out injured all last year, or Mitchell who played a second season of college? Also Blake Griffin won the award after a year out injured, nobody ever had a problem with him winning back then afaik.

He was like a redshirt senior or something.

The only real way to be lucky or unlucky in this league is in the rookie draft. Jay Z has had one of the worst teams a few times but has never won the lottery. Ian is probably one of the luckier GMs in that regard. Ian also benefitted from having a bad team that never seemed to accidentally win games, like some other tanking teams tend to do. Jeremiah is also quite lucky winning the lottery in the KAT year, and also IMO lucky in drafting Jokic. You can claim there was some great insight into that pick but I tend to think it’s mainly luck.
That being said, everyone creates their own situation in this league to some extent. Luck might have a bit to do with it but that’s the expectation for tanking teams.

The draft is 50% skill and 50% crap shoot. Particularly for us because as fake GMs we have 0 control over the players we draft.
