I am sure I will be chastised by James for posting this thread, but Noel's rating has really been bothering me. He has been awful and I feel like his rating needs to reflect that. I'm not even going to post stats because they are so bad and I know someone is going to try to argue that it is a minutes thing... but it is not. His offense has always been limited, but he has transformed from a good defensive big to one of the worst defenders (if not THE worst at the center position). He is barely cracking the rotation on the worst team in the league. Here are some quotes from articles I've read:
But it’s clear that so far this season, the Mavericks are a better team with Noel on the bench. When Noel is on the floor, the Mavs play at tire-fire levels — a 95.4 offensive rating and a 115.4 defensive rating. That minus-20 net rating is by far the worst of anyone on the Mavs, which is particularly alarming when you consider the rest of the roster is mostly the same from a 33-win team a season ago. On a bad team, Noel has been the worst of the worst.
According to the tracking numbers at Synergy Sports, Noel is in the 13th percentile in the NBA this season when defending the roll man.
Noel has the worst net rating (minus-20) of any player on their roster, and their defensive rating is 9.5 points better when he’s off the floor.
Maybe its the contract situation, or maybe its Carlisle's coaching style, who knows? But I don't feel that it is right to have Nerlens sitting at a 78 in D5 when he cannot beat-out Salah Mejri for minutes. He is only 23 and still looks like he might develop into a rotational center, but as it stands right now, I think we jumped the gun a little bit on giving him his 78 rating.
