There is so much to say about why Charlotte or why Houston, and vice versa. I'm hoping everyone realizes at this point that we've discussed the pluses and minuses ad nauseam, and at some point, we all simply had to make a choice.
I will say, along the way, we agreed on the following:
- At one point, we also had Cleveland, Memphis, Portland, and the Lakers in the bidding.
- While PG's ultimate preference seems to be going to Los Angeles IRL, it seems that would only be if he's nearly guaranteed to be playing on a super team of sorts. The D5 Lakers did not present that option, so once the article came out about a week ago, we eliminated the Lakers shortly after that.
- Loyalty: While somewhat important (he did TELL the Pacers he was going to leave, rather than just leave, thus allowing them to gain some assets for him as opposed to the alternative), we felt that the PG in our league had only been on Portland for 2 years, and was traded there, not drafted by them or signed to them in the past. Once we got to the next point, we eliminated Portland.
- PG ultimately seems to care the most about winning. Winning the championship. So, he would go where he felt he could win the most, the soonest, and for the longest. As we were comparing Houston, Charlotte, and Portland, this is where it became clear he would leave Portland. Portland has had this same core in place for 2 years. They've lost in the 1st round of the playoffs both years. They have no young pieces to develop that will make them better. They are in fact, only getting older, and would be standing still this offseason, basically, while other teams do the same or get either slightly, or vastly, better around them.
Where we ultimately had disagreements was deciding who was set up better to win - Houston or Charlotte?
- In the end, after much deliberation, and all the factors that were discussed and fleshed out, we are here. Out of the 7 members voting on this thing, we ended up with 5 votes for CHA and 2 votes for HOU.
Paul George will sign the following deal:
Year 1: $29,729,900
Year 2: $31,959,643
Year 3: $34,189,386 (Player Option)
Total: $95,878,929
Paul is excited to join the Charlotte Hornets for at least the next 2 seasons. If the team is disappointing (not going deep into the playoffs) by the end of season 2, he would likely opt out and look for a 1 year deal elsewhere. His contract structure at this time lines up so that in "year 4", no matter where he'll be at that time, he'll be eligible for the full 35% max contract by that year. So, it works to his advantage to stay in Charlotte and earn his BR's to get the full max plus get the raises over 5 years for that last huge contract of his career (most likely).
Thank you to all who bid, but especially the two who put in by far the most effort, and were the top two choices all along, with all information gathered. Someone was going to get hurt here. Heck, multiple people got hurt here, but I think we are all feeling a sense of relief at having this decided, even if it didn't go the way we wanted it to.
And so it goes. And that's the way it is... That's the nightly news for this Monday night. ...and that's part of our world tonight. Good night and good luck. Glad we could get together. Good night and a good tomorrow. Go Fuck Yourself, San Diego.
