Carmelo is on the decline. I am not sure if he even cares at this point, or if it is because the players around him have gotten better.
In any case, it needs to be accounted for. And the truth of the matter is that Carmelo isn't an 88. He's been on the decline since the 2013-2014 season, in which he averaged: 27.4 PPG on 45.2/40.2/84.8 FG/3PT/FT respectively. He also averaged 8.1 RPG, 3.1 APG, 0.7 BLK, 1.2 STL, on 39.7 MPG. Those are 88+ numbers, and I know that he has come down in rating since then, but I think we all felt he would regain some form, and he hasn't.
This season, he is averaging: 21.9 PPG on 42.2/34.1/87.2 FG/3PT/FT, 6.1 RPG, 2.8 APG, 0.3 BLK, 0.9 STL, in 33.4 minutes a night. His numbers from last season are relatively similar.
2015-2016 differences: -0.1 PPG, -1.6 RPG, -1.4 APG, -0.2 BLK, 0 change in steals, -1.2 in FG%, +0.2 in 3PT%, +4.3 FT%, and -1.7 minutes a night.
He's never been a good defender, he's average at best and lots of times looks lost in the team defensive scheme. Some will say his numbers have fallen off because of Phil, others will say its because of his teammates improving. It doesn't matter, his numbers have changed. These a Rudy Gay type numbers circa 2 or 3 years ago.
His FG, 3PT, and Pass all can come down a chunk, and his O-Aware can come down as well. His block can come down as well as his D-Aware and D-Reb and O-Reb. He has also gotten older and slower, I don't think his Speed or Quick are 75's anymore.
