Welcome back Brandon! Just another example of how we take care of our own in NOLA.

this is an INSANE discount. He 100% should have been maxed
I'm surprised he didn't laugh and walk away from this offer

plus he didn't even get his extra year as a birds right player? Did Alex post the wrong contract?

Yeah weren't the Pelicans pursuing like every PG on the market, how'd they get this discount for an up and coming 24 yr old

Nope that's his contract. This was his only offer. If nobody else has shown interest a week into the offseason, then it's a pretty easy decision.
If you all think a player deserves a better contract, then offer it yourself. If you assume it's a done deal and don't even offer, then a discount like this happens. Or in Mike Conley's case, you get completely ignored for the opening week of free agency.
I have other guys (Aaron Brooks and Mo Williams) who might go for discounts too because everyone is ignoring them. Free agency goes both ways, some get overpaid, some go for bargains.

Bidding was closed on Brandon Knight on July 6th... just 5 days into free agency. If he wasn't satisfied with his offers, then why was bidding closed so early into FA? The really weird thing is that Scalabrine continued to offer Knight's job to other players even after bidding was closed. What would happen if he signed one of the other guys? Was Knight prepared to ride it out into RSFA and hope someone gave him a big contract?

Just putting it out there, if I signed another PG I was going to start Brandon at SG, just like he plays in PHX IRL. His starting spot was never in doubt.

It's just really weird to me that bidding was closed 3 weeks ago and we are just now seeing Knight agree to this lowball contract, despite his GM actively looking to replace him over those 3 weeks. Something just doesn't jive.

Well if I signed a PG I wouldn't have signed Burks of Roberson, I wouldn't have the cap space. So yes Brandon Knight, who's higher rated and a better player than Wiggins today, would start at SG. This shouldn't be a shock either, Brandon plays SG IRL! In fact it's probably his best position. Moneywise this contract is about the same as Fournier's and I'd rate them as players similarly.

idk, I guess, from my perspective, if I am Knight and you had in fact signed another point guard, there is a 0% chance I would return to New Orleans to play shooting guard when Andrew Wiggins is sitting right there... which goes back to my original concern here- what would Knight have done in that situation? Re-opened bidding 3 weeks after it was closed?

For some reason I thought contracts weren't allowed to go down and then back up. Is that just something we talked about and never implemented? Or did I make that up? Very possible.

If he wasn't satisfied with his offers, then why was bidding closed so early into FA? This right here is also the difference I think. This is your assumption, not mine. I don't really like Brandon Knight, I don't think he's very good, he's an inefficient player who doesn't do anything on an elite level. So with that as my perspective going into his free agency, his value didn't surprise me or strike as too big of a discount. With no market to push up his value and change my thoughts on him or what he's worth, then I guess this is the result. He was on the market more than long enough to get great offers. Kyrie had like 7 max contract offers in the same time span Knight only received his offer to re-sign. Also, about the other offers made by the Pelicans, for me it was more the other way around as this decision came first. Those offers didn't affect Knight, he affected those offers. Knight was a negative factor in every other offer made by the Pelicans.

He was grayed out and i thought bidding was closed for him. i could have offered him a max contract instead of Conley because he is just 24 yrs old with a lot of potential to be a star.

Jesus people, the bidding was closed on Knight. This decision was made a long time ago. It's just being announced now. The fact remains, 5 days into free agency, he had one offer, from his bird rights team. That's an easy decision, one of the easiest I've ever made. If you haven't offered on a player after 5 days, then they're obviously not a priority to you.
I'm surprised so many people care about Knight now given that nobody but Brian cared about him when free agency opened.

I don't see how the decision was made really early if Brian was still chasing other point guards. Even if you would have gotten an offer after 5 days, I don't see how you allow Knight to go to the Pelicans. Durant almost left my team after not receiving another bid for almost over two weeks. Knight isn't a natural sg, so I don't believe that excuse would work here.

He plays sg IRL with the Suns and when he was a free agent IRL and the suns came to him with a contract that would make him the starting sg there he signed it. He's a sg! He starts at sg IRL, he plays his best at sg IRL, for real look at the stats, and he seems to like playing sg. Can anyone point me to an article where Knight demanded a trade from Phoenix because he doesn't like playing sg?? He's been there almost 2 years you'd think he's get on that by now. If we say Brandon Knight can't be a shooting guard then we're saying that a guy can't play the same position in D5 that he does IRL. Okay great Draymond can't be a PF, no he's a sf doesn't matter that he starts at PF IRL. Oh AL Horford? His natural position is PF he's not allowed to start at center under any circumstances. I think you have to trade Marcus Morris okc he might play PF IRL but he's clearly a natural sf. He definitely hates playing pf. I'm surprised people here think they know a players position better than NBA coaches. This whole line of thinking is just absurd

Much to Brian's disappointment, he didn't get any of those guys. Knight was a big factor in that. It was very unlikely he'd get two of the top PGs unless some of them lacked any other decent offers. That didn't happen though as things played out with all of them getting good starting PG offers. Are you saying teams should be punished for pursuing other players while also trying to re-sign their own guys? I don't think that's a good idea. I can imagine the shitstorm now if 'you made an offer on Lebron and Kawhi' was a reason for Durant leaving in free agency. We want to encourage as much activity and as many offers as possible during free agency.

But if you pursue others over your own position player, I think that is a great foundation for an argument to be made for why he would leave. It really doesn't bother me all that much, I was just caught off guard on how fast his name was greyed out to release of his team decision. To be honest, I thought Ian messed up bc there wasn't an announcement.

I too thought that Knight was a done deal when I looked around at the market after Kyrie signed. I would have offered as I had a lot of money to spend. I didn't offer when free agency first opened when I sent the majority of my offers out because I have little free time right now.

Don't blame Alex and Brian if you failed in your other endeavors and when you went and see other options, five days had passed and only Brian has offered.
Plain and simple.

The fact was there was a proper explanation to what happened. And about that leisure time, that is also applicable to the PAs. The rules did not specify how long PAs should wait for other offers, it is the PAs prerogative. Walt is the patient one, Alex chooses to decide early and etc. So, what is the problem with that? And about the position thing, Knight played 55% at the SG position last season! So, what is your problem with that? Those are facts Kevin so how about putting some facts in your arguments too. Remember what you said to Jeremiah? (This is all about the topic, nothing personal)

One more.
Brandon signed a 70 Million contract in real life.
That is equivalent to 94 million contract this season.
Which means .06% difference in value. Be the one to decide if that difference is material.

Remember what you said to Jeremiah? (This is all about the topic, nothing personal) The fact is that he is not a SG. That is a fact. How many season did he play PG for the Bucks? I will bet that when he is traded or Bledsoe is traded this season, Knight will go back to playing PG. 55% really proves my point honestly. The suns are playing with two point guards on the court because it was their best option. We will see this season if I am right. Booker will be playing SG and Knight will be the odd man out. The whole argument doesn't even matter because everyone was talking in what ifs. All I said was that arguments that Knight could have a starting spot on a team at his natural position over playing SG is a clear foundation for persuading Knight to go elsewhere.
