Alec Burks is excited to join the New Orleans Pelicans on the following contract:
Year 1: $14,274,744 Year 2: $14,274,744 Year 3: $15,844,966 Year 4: $17,429,463
Total: $61,823,917
Alec received a very early offer from the Trailblazers, but it was very low money, around 1,000,000. While we can't blame Brandon Roy for looking for a discount, it was not something we were at all comfortable signing to, especially not early.
Josh Barber put in a good, solid, very public offer afterwards. We would likely have signed with his team, but felt there might still be more money out there in this market. In the end, it turns out we were right. With this contract, Alec receives the respect he feels he earned, by way of a 4 year, guaranteed contract worth over 60 million dollars. The Pelicans do have a somewhat crowded swing situation right now, but GM Brian Scalabrine has assured us he will consider Alec for the Starting SG position. Brian likes the idea of Andrew Wiggins anchoring the 2nd unit and being a 6th man of the year candidate. You don't usually shell out this kind of money if you expect the player to ride the pine consistently, in any case.
We would like to thank GM's Brandon Roy and Josh Barber for their interest, and congratulations to the New Orleans Pelicans and GM Brian Scalabrine for his great signing of Alec Burks!

Have fun sitting the bench when you could have been a starter!

Have fun sitting the bench when you could have been a starter! Cool story. 20 Million dollars more than your highest offer says hello. That shows belief in and desire for a player. He felt much more appreciated in New Orleans, so there he goes. Also, you seem to have gone after a SG in Devin Booker who could take that starting role away very soon. Or do we expect you would start Burks over your beloved MKG? In summary: Money talks.
