The Indianapolis Star would like to report the hiring of three new coaches to the Pacer staff. Two assistants and one head coach. The Pacers have not come out of the gate the way that GM Larry Bird would have liked them to. He was seen in a press conference saying that he thinks the team needs leadership and guidance and that is something that their captain, Danny Granger, is unable to provide. They brought in a veteran presence to help pace young All Star big man Roy Hibbert, but the team is still lacking in this area. They wanted to address all parts of the game, and think they have done that with the players, urgh, I mean coaches, they have chosen.
With the talent and potential for improvement that the Pacers have on their frontline the Pacers thought they should bring in a coach that knew how to play those positions. The new coach will try to pass along his midrange game as well as his play under the basket to his new players. The Pacers would like to introduce one of their new assistants and big man coach "The Dunkin' Dutchman" Rik Smits.
There is skill at the point guard level along with depth as two young guys push each other for the starting gig. Darren Collison has proven himself worthy at some points of this short season but then at other times he has not done quite enough. George Hill is also a young player who could be a great backup to Collison, spelling him from time to time of the starting position. Depending on which one progresses more will determine the starter. The point guard should be the floor leader on the team, and that is something that Collison and Hill have not yet mastered. At the other guard spot is another young player, who could turn into something special, Paul George. The veteran of the group is combo guard Leandro Barbosa. Barbosa is capable of shooting the ball, slashing to the basket, and running the point. To make this group better though the Pacers wanted to bring in a true floor general. Someone with a lot of knowledge of the game and is capable of running a team himself. The stellar point guard was a key contributor on the Reggie Miller-led teams, and was the starting point guard when Indiana made it to the Finals in 2000. Jackson was the veteran presence that escalated the Pacers to new heights in the 1990's. He never averaged fewer than eight assists per game.
The last man the Pacers would like to introduce is their new head coach... Reggie Miller. Miller has to be the greatest Pacer of all time. He spent his entire career with the Pacers. Now he has returned to take this team to new heights. Miller would lead the Pacers from futility to the Finals and many postseason escapades during his playing time. Something he looks to bring back to the team. A volatile, high-voltage scorer from the off guard position, Reggie Miller was one of the supreme shooters of any era. But he also had a penchant for the spectacular clutch shot in gunslinger fashion that made him a feared and despised opponent. His heroic play down the stretch of games became known as "Miller Time." With leadership and scoring ability he hopes to teach Granger and George. With his knowledge and skill he hopes that along with Roy Hibbert this duo can make up a team that will go deep into that playoffs. Miller said that he can see the potential for leadership in Granger. He just has to dig that out. Miller said that was a personal challenge that he was willing to undertake. He would even help his shooting along with the way.
The trio were seen leaving the press conference saying:
"It's Miller Time!"
