I'd like to start a discussion about some things going on in the NBA that make you wonder just what the Hell is going on and what will likely get a GM fired in the next 5 years.
To begin, I'd like to mention the Orlando Magic. I don't understand what they are doing. They reached on Gordon, IMO, and drafted Payton. Two guys who cannot shoot, or at least, didn't shoot very well in college. Combine this with have Oladipo, a guy who cannot shoot it very well, and trading away Afflalo, a guy who is known for shooting, makes me wonder how there will be any driving lines for Payton or Dipo. Even if they get to the rim at an elite level, the defense will be able to just sag back and stop them. So, to solve this problem, they throw a bunch of money at Ben Gordon, which would be great if it was 2005, but they could have gotten Gordon considerably cheaper than what they paid him. And they traded Afflalo, and signed Gordon? Doesn't make too much sense to me. Channing Frye can stretch the floor a bit, but they're going to be paying him ~8 million when he is 35. And he doesn't protect the rim, which is something they need as Vucevic doesn't do it exceptionally well. This off-season makes me think the Magic GM will be fired in 2-3 years.
Next off, how about the Phoenix Suns? They draft 2 guards but also draft a solid wing I like in Warren. Anyways, they had, arguably, the best back court tandem in the league last year in Dragic and Bledsoe, but they go out and draft Ennis and Bogdanovic. Makes no sense to me. Combine that with them executing a sign and trade for Isaiah Thomas, and I'm wondering what the fuck they are doing. Thomas will be making ~7 million a year, a lot to pay a back up, and we all can agree he isn't a better PG than Bledsoe or Dragic. This makes me think they won't resign Bledsoe. But they also lack the new META trend of a stretch 4. Which makes me think Glenn's wet dream of a sign and trade of Bledsoe to the Bucks and Ersan Ilyasova to the Suns a likely possibility.
Carmelo, what the fuck? A huge vacuum of power is created in the East, at least for the next two years, and you resign with the Knicks? I get that 50 million dollars is 50 million dollars, but there's diminishing returns. And don't say you want to win, ever again. Because you just hand cuffed a franchise and had the opportunity to win. And it isn't like Melo and his family wouldn't be able to survive making 5 million or so less a year.
Daryl Morey. All your poison pill, super smart offer sheets came back to bite you in the ass. You had to give away a pick to get rid of Lin. And you some how managed to trade away Asik for a pick. But still, you did all of this to sign Bosh or Melo, and you came up empty handed. And to some extent, Chris Bosh. Bosh goes back to Miami and struggles to fight for power in the East with a slew of other teams. Literally, the East is wide open. He could have went to the Rockets and, possibly, had a more dominant, pound for pound big 3 than what was in Miami in 2013-2014. I guess we will all see just how good Chris Bosh is now, or how good LeBron made Chris Bosh look.
