After a great amount of deliberation, tons of offers sent back and forth, and thinking about each teams unique situation for days on end, Deron has made what he describes as "the toughest decision of my life."
The following contract has been agreed upon:
Year 1: $18,466,130
Year 2: $19,754,465
Year 3: $21,042,800 (Player Option)
Year 4: $22,331,135
Year 5: $23,894,320
Total: $105,488,850
Deron will take his services to the Cleveland Cavaliers!
We ultimately felt that the combination of having Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce along with young talent like Larry Sanders and Demar DeRozan to build for the future, in addition to having additional cap space next season was too good of an opportunity to pass up.
Also, as hard as it was to do, we felt that leaving OKC was the right decision. For one, the difference in money was about $3 million per season, and for two, OKC did not show a strong enough desire to bring Deron back by clearing enough cap space for him. Leaving Durant was an extremely difficult decision, but Deron wanted to head to the Eastern Conference where he feels his path to a ring is a little easier, and playing with two HOFers in Pierce and KG is another opportunity we could not pass up!
Other teams in contention: Houston Rockets, Milwaukee Bucks, Dallas Mavericks, Indiana Pacers, OKC Thunder.
Congrats to all of the offering teams. He truly would have been happy playing with any one of you, but had to make the tough decision and pick just one that he felt offered the best chance to win, have fun, and potentially take over as a face of the franchise (with PP and KG aging, Deron is the building block).
