Memphis(AP):
The Grizzlies were the laughing stock of the league last year, finishing with one major player on their roster(Steve Nash). General Manager Greg Schiano was brought into make drastic changes. What did Schiano do? Trade almost every player that the originally inherited team had. His biggest move brought in Mario Chalmers and Ryan Anderson for younger players Tristan Thompson and Evan Turner. At the time of the trade, many people viewed Schiano as an idiot, saying that he gave up too much in an initial trade which was rejected by the league. Schiano worked through the rejection to bring in the two players who have given the Grizzlies the best effort. Chalmers has been playing like he was shot out of a cannon. Anderson is one of those players who isn't viewed as highly around the league, but Schiano believed in the talent that Anderson could provide. Joining Chalmers and Anderson, was the free agent acquisition of JR Smith. Smith has proven to be the spark that the offense needs to get going. The final acquistions was a two part trade with the Washington Wizards that brought in Anderson Varajeo and Nene. Many people questioned whether the Grizzlies could play as big as they do with 2 centers and then a swing-power forward. However, the Grizz started off very slow but have rattled off a ridiculous record over the months of December and January. They were at the cellar of the league for the beginning few months and have now positioned themselves into a potential playoff appearance for the Grizzlies. Schiano just hopes that the team continues to play hard everyday and remember that every game will matter.
