Julius is pretty productive on the offensive end of the court. He needs a good defensive big to play beside. The Pacers already have that in Jarrett Allen. He should be able to replace some of the offensive production lost in DeRozan heading to Houston. DeRozan has played every position except center for the Pacers leading them to one of the best seasons they have had in a while. We want to thank him for his leadership and wish him luck in Houston. I hear he will make a great duo with one of the league’s best players there. Covington gives us another quality defender and versatile wing. He also has a large expiring contract. Along with the dead contracts of Rubio and Morris, the Pacers may be looking to make additional moves before the trade deadline. The Pacers also get the rookie out of Arkansas who has spend some time honing his craft in the developmental league, Moses Moody. Steve Kerr is on record for saying that Moody will be a cornerstone for the Warriors. Larry Bird had similar feelings about his new rookie and look to build a solid core of young players with Jarrett Allen, Collin Sexton, Julius Randle and Caris LeVert.

I’m sure many GMs will feel I am punting Moses too soon, and that appending a draft pick to him on top of his cheap deal is foolish. However, I was perilously close to not having max room to extend AD and could’ve been fucked come the draft when those cap figures are formally announced. It’s not that I have zero faith in a deal materializing under those conditions — I just know GMs wouldn’t have been giving me any discount knowing clearing the cap was paramount. Priority number 1 now that I have 2 of 3 superstars locked in long term is to ensure I can secure the third one with no issues.
Additionally, this isn’t just dumping Moody — that HOU ‘25 1st could become valuable over time. I had the opportunity years ago to add a 2022 1st from a team for Rajon Rondo, and I turned it down. That draft pick right now is a top 10 pick based on the standings. I’m banking on not repeating that mistake I made in the past and that I’ve just picked up a prime asset down the line when I will be so unbelievably strapped cap wise that a good to elite rookie would be worth far more in that situation than waiting on Moses in my ‘win-now’ window.
