Wanted to wait till season’s end for this, but his play has been too good and he’d be someone who would help in my rotation now with a boost. It’s the much ballyhooed Herb “Not on Herb!” Jones SW!
Of this stellar rookie class, Evan Mobley (rightfully) has gotten top billing as it’s best defender. His impact on the Cavs has been immense and one could argue he’s been the most impactful two-way rookie to come into the League since Anthony Davis. However, Herb Jones as a defender hasn’t been that far behind Mobley and has been supremely impactful for the Pelicans as they’ve weathered Zion’s absence. The stat run down — counting and advanced — for Herb:
- 52 GP (43 starts) averaging 9.5/3.9/2.1 PTS/RPG/APG splits with 2.5 STOCKs a game all in a neat 29 MPG
- Shooting a crisp 50/35/84 on 58% TS/ 54% eFG
- Per Cleaning the Glass, he’s had a very significant impact to Pels both offensively and defensively when on the court. He is: 95th percentile League wide at +11.7 net rating, 93rd offensively in Points Per Possession and 81st in Defensive Points Per Possession
- Second to only Mobley in rookie WS at 3.3, and leads all rookies with more than 1,000 mins played in WAR (3.3), total RAPTOR (1.4), and is third in defensive RAPTOR amongst rookies at 2.2
- Fourth in the League in total deflections (159) and leader amongst rookies in deflections
- Fourth amongst rookies in total contests (331)
In short, he’s been incredibly impactful and has the markings of an elite 3 and D wing with real offensive potential, particularly as a cutter and slasher. His awareness on both ends of the court have been top notch, and he looks like a guy who will contend for All Defense teams in the years to come.
