I believe if players like Marcin Gortat are about to get a sizeable rating increase then Varejao should be in line for one as well. To me Varejao is the superior player.
Varejao at this point leads the league in total rebounds (averaging 6 offensive boards a game), is shooting 53% for fgs, is shooting 80% on fts, and is leading the league in PER at 24.5 for centers.
In the last 4 games (all without Irving) he is averaging 18.5 points and 18.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists, .633 shooting, .857 from the line.
Smaller sample size but the point was to show how he is still playing well even with the Cavs best offensive threat out.
His DRB%/ORB% are insane (32.9 and 18.4 respectively) and his AST% is fantastic for a big 15.9% (averaging 3.3 assists). He is doing all this on a relatively low USG% at 17.6% (was 16.9% last year). This all means that he is highly efficient player who excels with out the ball in his hands.
This isn't some small sample size or him being a one year wonder, he has been doing this since Lebron left. Not at the same historic pace as this year but averaging at least a double double (or very close it) on great percentages for the past two years. Injuries has limited him in the last couple of years.
PER36 stats last year were very similar where he was at 12.4 pts, 13.2 rbs, and 2.0 asts.
He has also cut down on his turnovers (from 15.2% to 11.9%) and his ORTG/DRTG split is at 126/105 at the moment, meaning he is fantastic for the team offence and is really good with the team defence.
So I feel like he should be in the mid-80s at least at 84. If he continues this pace for the rest of the season 84-86 would be fair.
