I agree with you JR, NBA Teams should be allowed to rest their starters. Stern should not possess that kind of control over the league.

Spurs still almost managed to win. Stern is just trying to flex his muscles so people dont forget about him during the season.

I watched the last quarter. Spurs could have won. This game brings a lot of confidence to the spurs bench players.

I am kind of on the fence here. I'm not sure Pop should really be fined, but I also think it sucks to rest your players on the road, especially at a place where you only go once a year.
Me personally, I've never been to a professional NBA game. If I bought tickets for my first game in Philly, and my favorite team, the Knicks, were in town, and then they decided to rest Chandler/Melo, I'd be pretty bummed out.
I think he should have at least played them a little here and there, and I think, as a VERY good team playing another VERY good team in a potential NBA Finals matchup, I'd want to see how my guys, you know, match up.
He should have rested his guys Wednesday night if anything.

If anything I'd say it's the NBA's fault for having too many back to back games I mean 4 games in 5 nights, that's just ridiculous, and a lot of teams have issue about it. Especially older teams. Spurs are one of the teams that have luxury of having the best coach in the game along with the best bench in the NBA so they can get away with benching.

I get they can get away with it, but should they do it, considering the NBA, like it or not, is a business? It is a league completely driven by stars, not by a team name-brand or even by Coaches (like the NFL).
If you buy a ticket to see the Thunder, you wanna see Durant and Westbrook. You buy a ticket to see the Heat - LeBron/Wade/Bosh. The Lakers - Kobe/Dwight/Gasol/Nash The Spurs - Duncan/Parker/Ginobili
Again, rest your guys on Wednesday night against Orlando if you think your players need it. It's a big "F U" to fans in the city of Miami, and anyone tuning in that night to see those players play.
Again, I'm not really sure whether a fine is in order, I'm more just talking about the concept of it in general.
Especially in freaking NOVEMBER! If this is April and they have the playoffs clinched, etc...OK that's another thing.

If this is April and they have the playoffs clinched, etc...OK that's another thing. I'll try to go point by point 1. True the NBA is a business as a whole, but that's not the Spurs issue, their job is to stay healthy and stay at top level so they win a championship for themselves and their fans, they don't owe anything to David Stern. 2. I know about the whole star thing, and that's unfair but still you are getting to see majority of the stars (you still saw LBJ, WADE, BOSH), and whenever the Spurs have been on national TV (primarily NBA finals) they always get a cold reception from the fans (TV ratings whatever it maybe). BUT I completely understand this point that it sucks for fans wanting to see stars so I am more inclined to agree with you on that.
3. Why should they rest against Orlando when that's a game they can win/lose if bench are there instead of the sure fire starters, while take a 50/50 chance against a more motivated MIA team knowing they face Spurs starters, that's 2 losses that Spurs could take which would hurt them in grand scheme of things when trying to get home court advantage in playoffs. That's a dangerous compromise taking chance with starters with Heat and going with bench vs ORL instead of taking the so called "EASY" win vs ORL and still a 50/50 vs MIA. 4. They don't owe SHIT to the city of Miami or it's fans, they are most obligated to the Spurs and the fans of the SA Spurs who pay the money to see a championship team. Here is how CRAZY and idiotic the scheduling is espn.go.com/nba/team/schedule/_/name/mia/miami-heatespn.go.com/nba/team/schedule/_/name/sa/san-antonio-spursMIA had 4 days rest between Cavs game and Spurs game, while Spurs played 4 games in 5 nights. The Spurs played 6 road games in 8 days MIA played 3 home games in 8 days you tell me how that's fair. Last time MIA played a road game was on NOV 17th and the next time they'll play a road game is on DEC 4 against the Wizards (which shouldn't even count since Wizards SUCK), so in reality MIA after the huge road trip they had will really face a TRUE ROAD GAME in DEC 20 against Dallas. that's a ENTIRE MONTH's worth of NO ROAD GAMES that MIA has. Also consider that MIA when they played the 6 road games had 9 days compared to SAS and it's 8 days and the travel pattern for the SAS is more demanding (going from BOS all the way to MIA) then MIA going from ATL to PHX (since you are staying south entire time). The problem is the ridiculous scheduling the NBA for teams and that's a problem that Stern and Stu Jackson has to fix or else teams will continue to bench it's star players in favor of resting and keeping them healthy for the playoffs.

Well, I'm a little short on time, but suffice to say, I agree, the schedule was a mess for the Spurs there. Apparently Pop decided to bench these guys when he first saw the schedule, but whatever. I just don't agree with it. I don't think there should be fines, but it upsets me that he did it.
Again, I understand WHY they did it, and I understand the schedule was a mess, completely...I just don't think Pop should have done it.

It still ended up being a great game. I think the Heat should be happy that the Spurs were missing their top 6 players (4 at home, two injured). I guarantee ratings were a lot higher when people found out the Spurs were ahead for a decent portion of the game.

So Stern fined the Spurs $250,000. He's clearly power tripping on this one. Stern has no business telling teams how to coach and distribute minutes.

Ok I didn't have the full story initally...but now, yes I think they should have gotten fined! There's a huge difference in resting your players on the bench and telling ur starters not to come to work.
People pay good money to come a see these guys play basketball. I get that the players may be fatigued from numberous games in a row, but why just just make them sit on the bench?? That's what they do with players that are actually injured right?? They don't tell them they don't have to come to the game, otherwise tell the players that are injured they too do not have to come to the games. Fans want to see these guys most of the time whether the actually play or not.
A few years ago the Kings/Hornets played an exhibition game here in Reno, NV. Now I personally had never seen a pro psotring event other than Hockey, also, since my wife doesn't like spoorts at all, this was going to be my night for a pro basketball game. I splurdged on a ticket and got to sit right behind the Kings bench, also got to watch pre-game warm-ups. Freakin cool!! Now, I would have been totally pissed if the coach had done to me what he did in SA. I spend $100 for that seat and would have felt totally ripped off if I hadn't got to see the players I wanted.
