New York Knicks - Hassan Whiteside
After almost 5 weeks of negotiations and committee discussion, Hassan Whiteside has finally decided to sign with the New York Knicks!
Two teams were in the running to begin: Portland and Cleveland, but both teams deviated with their offers and promises and potential situations to the extent that, for the first time, we re-opened offers on a free agent since the committee felt we were in a deadlock! It is also surely what Hassan Whiteside would choose to do in real life, feeling like he could get more elsewhere. Portland eventually offered a $69,924,585 total contract, Cleveland offered $67,666,700.
After re-opening offers the best bids were received from Philadelphia ($90,408,736 total), who actually had submitted an offer earlier during OSFA, but this bid was reduced to $74,000,000. New York offered a comparable $72,213,193 total.
Given Hassan has declining stock, long-term money mattered to his decision! Both Philadelphia and New York offered marginally more long term value financially.
Whiteside fits more with Derozan and Lowry in Portland than any of the other situations, there's no getting beyond that, and Cleveland doesn't have a true starting Center, but Dennis Smith Jr, Aaron Gordon and company in New York aren't so bad either. In terms of teammates though, Portland and Cleveland still had the slight advantage.
Previous GM disloyalty still played a small role with Cleveland's offer, as it did also with Philadelphia since it felt like a 29 year old Whiteside on a very 'green' rebuilding team was just being acquired as trade-bait. To begin negotiations Portland also had to be prompted, twice, to write more than a one sentence offer, so it's not like there was any overture of dedication from Portland either.
The committee also felt this was an opportunity to add to the mix that a D5 factor should count for something with Whiteside's decision - nobody loves Hassan more than Billy King, it's the primary reason why he left the league earlier in the year! Such loyalty and virtual-D5-friendship between a GM and a player should be a factor if OSFA is going to be thorough. In the same way Thibs brings former Bulls to Minnesota in real life - Whiteside returning to the brow of the Titanic with Billy King is meant to be.
Deviations in offers played a role in Whiteside's decision, and actually came to characterise discussions somewhat. Portland and Philadelphia both offered huge amounts to start and then quickly reduced their offers. Cleveland required a lot of prompting to offer the kind of position that would compete with Portland.
Lastly there was simply committee fatigue! The reason I am posting the thread instead of player agent, Brian Scalabrine, is partly because I feel that it is in the interests of the entire league to make a final decision and stop wasting our time and everyone else's time! Other player decisions are resting on this one! It's nearly been 5 weeks and it's time to get on with all our lives! Apologies Brian Scalabrine for taking the reigns from you, but I want to finally wrap this up and I felt like there was no better time than now!
