I've been researching this a bit and I'm not sure Tomas should have been a free agent. Tomas was drafted by yours truly as GM of the Jazz in the 2012 rookie draft. However, he did not actually play in an NBA season until 2016/2017. I believe normally we give 1 year after the player is drafted to claim the rights, and then the salaries don't start until the player joins the NBA. However, this rule was created after we held the 2012 draft and I can't find anything at all about how we signed 2nd round picks from 2012. Perhaps Ian Noble remembers? Some people signed 2012 2nd rounders in this thread but the thread was for the 2013 draft. I don't think 2012 2nd rounders ever had a fair chance to be signed, especially those guys who were not in-game at the time. I believe Elton Brand should have a chance to claim rights on Satornansky for the normal 2nd round contract, if he wants to. This player was unfairly signed to the Grizzlies when the Jazz already have a claim to him.

I'm a huge fan of Tomas, so I have attempted to claim rights on him in the 2017 1st Round Salaries and Second Round Signings thread.

It looks like that 2013 Thread was the thread for signing 2012 2nd Rounders. Satoransky was not signed by the Jazz GM at the time so the Jazz don't get to retain draft rights to him I'm afraid.

But in that thread, Walt posts that he thought it was for 2012 but it was actually for 2013. I seemed to remember that we retained rights until a player came over from europe or something? I really feel like 2012 2nd rounders from Europe were not given a fair chance to be retained.
