I'm tempted to move this forward to April 19th (the final day of the regular season).
The reason the Expiring Players Deadline was introduced was to reward teams for planning ahead to the Off Season. But what we end up with is a 3 month period of vastly reduced trade activity which harms the league.
March 1st - Expiring Players Deadline April 1st - Playoff Team Deadline April 19th - Playoffs Start May 19th - Playoffs End (Trading Resumes)
Since there is an entire month of Playoff sim time from the day the regular season ends until the end of the D5 Finals, I think that's a long enough length of time by itself to reward teams that planned ahead.
March 1st - April 1st - Playoff Team Deadline April 19th - Playoffs Start + Expiring Players Deadline May 19th - Playoffs End (Trading Resumes)
Let me know what you think guys.

I would be fine with the new dates. I don't really care about the timeline so long as these two issues are addressed:
1. Teams in the playoffs can't trade. There would be nothing worse than a team trading for a superstar just before game 1 of the Finals. I don't think there is much debate over this though.
2. In the small gap between the end of the playoffs and free agency teams can't go on a trading binge and immediately free up like $30 million in cap space for when the salary charts advance a few days later. This would be the point of the expiring contracts deadline of course.

Meaning that they still will not be allowed to trade until their playoff run is over. 2. The April 19th Expiring Players Deadline would basically stop the trading of expiring players until after the period of free agency. That means there would be no window of opportunity to dump contracts before Free Agency/Re-Signing begins.

The problem with not allowing teams to trade expiring contract is that it limits your ability to trade. The Wizards/Mavs trade is a PERFECT example of this, as Dallas is not trading Powell because he is scared he will loss him. Each team has 12 to 15 players and matching salaries is hard enough without worrying about whether or not the player expires. Sure, some teams will trade expiring contracts because they are scared they will lose that player, but whose to know besides that particular GM? It makes more sense to me just to wait until that rule is lifted to trade, as waiting gives you more options.
Also, I'd like to bring up a trade in D5. While I was personally involved in it, that is irrelevant to the conversation. However, the outcome of the trade illustrates how GM's need to be frugal, with or without this rule, or their teams may suffer.
