Wow I suppose this shores up the Spurs small forward position for a season.
Doesn't this mean that it becomes impossible to re-sign Jonas Valanciunas though?

Didn't the Spurs just trade a 1st round pick for Jrue a couple weeks ago?

Turner did not play well for us and did not mesh with our other guys. Plus his fitst season in Portland was horrible or below what he's capable of. Rudy Gay will ve a huge upgrade.
Spurs Accept.

Because it doesn't show that he has on the Free Agency List.... The way I understood the new rule is that anyone traded who is on a rookie deal has BRs to the team destined. So long as it is a first round contract (I think, not sure on that part, that was the caveat to RFA)

Oh! Jonas was a 2011 draftee and only just finished his rookie contract because he deferred for a year! But JR Wiles did not claim his bird rights...

That's because he was not on the list. I've been busy and I didn't have time to fight about it.
Of course we would have picked him up.

Honestly, I think JR should get the BRs. I think that it's dumb we have to claim BRs on a player, as if it were something we wouldn't want. It makes more sense to have to renounce them than to claim them. Avoids things like this that suck. Especially if JR is saying is true, that Jonas wasn't on a list to be notified he needed to claim them. While im generally for every GM being mindful of the circumstances surrounding their players, and have a stake in this in that I own his 2019 first, it's shitty to have this happen to someone. And logically, it doesn't make sense to have to claim them because everyone usually wants them. It makes more sense to have to renounce them if you don't want the cap hold.

It's also not lost on me that claiming BRs is a tracking issue, so that Ian can track who has them with player movement, but now that the rookie contract rule is in, its a little different. Moreover, I feel like GMs will provide who has them to you when the time comes, rather than have someone lose BRs because they forgot to bring it up in a post.

I know there was a post about player/team options, but I dont see or know where it would state Jonas had BRs. And as I said and most will that re-signing or matching Jonas was my #1 priority. So many new things added to the league I dont honestly know if I have time. I mean I thought I could match if anything..and if we had BRs I def would sign Jonas. Just figured I would match any GM.

Yes, this thread is about the trade. SORRY.
I have 3 point guards. Who was I suppose to trade??
Thomas - My fab and best player...NOPE Rose - Just signed him to a huge contract. I still believe in his game though. He might have went instead if salary not so much. I actually just got an offer to trade him for an expiring. I still think he has better upside than Holiday. Lose a first..gain our weakest position..SF.

That's ok JR, I think we can allow some leeway in this instance. Jonas is an anomaly player in this situation since he was drafted in 2011.
I'll edit the OSFA List and *asterisk his name to show you have BRs.

I'll accept this. I hope JR has considered that he's also taking in $7,437,080 for NEXT season for 3 players that don't have a lot of value, and he's going to be up against his cap to the point of not really having enough to bring someone like Rudy back. But, maybe that's a problem for another day. Not enough here to reject, but I also don't see any reason why this isn't just Gay for Jrue tbh.

Hey I do like he idea of renouncing rights instead of picking them up, not only does it lead to less things like this, but also less work/posts to check in general.

Why would Valanciunas have BRs? I thought the new rule only impact rookie deals not currently expiring this offseason (i.e. starts next offseason)?

I don't think claiming bird rights should be necessary, its just something that you have on a player. If you don't want them, then don't offer a contract.

And if you see you have a cap hold for the following season and you want that money but don't want the player, that's when you make it known you are renouncing BR's.

Why would Valanciunas have BRs? I thought the new rule only impact rookie deals not currently expiring this offseason (i.e. starts next offseason)? Josh is actually more correct here. JR Wiles - Josh is correct after all, Bird Rights on rookie contracts do not refer to 2012 rookies, it starts with 2013 rookies, so this has to apply to Jonas Valanciunas as well. Apologies guys I haven't had much time to be able to make decisions because I'm moving house, but I believe that is the defining factor in whether Jonas has BRs.
