Hey guys, With D5 now entering its 8th year, maybe it’s time to pony up. Ian as spent countless hours on this site and without Ian, D5 would not be as fun, popular or even be here lol. Ian may not want to ask members on the board for this but I feel we should do this. I’m recommending starting in September 2017 that each GM pays an annual fee of $10.00 to $20.00 to Ian. Some of you might know that Ian has been working hard on creating a new website to hopefully use one day. I can just imagine how insane the website will be. Paying this fee per GM will equal to $300.00 - $600.00 in total which would help Ian with domain cost and also reward him for all the admin work he has and continuing to do. Another side note, we could come up with a reward system for the team who wins the championship, such as $50.00 for the winner? Idk just throwing numbers around but that's a topic for another day. I bet we all spend $20.00 on nonsense each week, why not to something we like and enjoy. I've added a poll for you guys to vote on the dollar amount you could afford but I personally think this should be something we should do. Also I get that we all live in different areas in the world but we can figure it out with currency exchange.

Might want to keep money out of it for prizes etc. No sure of the legal standards, but I am sure the government might consider this online gambling. Just a thought even though the amount is minimal.

True, but then we could just use this as a fee to help the website.

It should be voluntary, though. I don't think it should. No way I guy like Ian should spent countless hour on this site and not be rewarded. If people pay money to be part of this, they will 1. be more into it and 2. probably take better care of their team.

I'm interested to see what people think about this! Since there's such an absurdly long Waiting List it's definitely an idea for newbie GMs. Although I did try that unsuccessfully once before when the Bulls were open back in 2014! If anybody wants to donate please go nuts

I'm not sure about the prize money but given all the work Ian does, I'd be more than willing to throw a fee his way

It's not fair for Filipinos, or anywhere else with an unfair exchange rate.

Might want to keep money out of it for prizes etc. No sure of the legal standards, but I am sure the government might consider this online gambling. Just a thought even though the amount is minimal. What are the odds that the government comes crashing in over a 50 dollar reward? That's not even a taxable amount for gambling winnings/fantasy sports winnings. Just send the winnings as a gift over paypal and be done with it. I don't see how its any different than youtube or facebook businesses people doing giveaways of cash prizes, items, worth way more than 50 bucks. I think that there are only state laws that affect this, like I know in some states you can't profit from a raffle or something it has to be donated to a cause. But Ian's not really profiting from the league given how many hours are put into it, that and he's not in the states anyways. Personally I think the 50 dollar reward would be awesome, if we're that worried we could just make it an Amazon Gift Card or something like that and mail it to the person who wins.

I'm 100% against a mandatory fee. I can tell you for sure that I wouldn't have joined D5 way back when, had there been a fee.
Sim league fantasy basketball isn't a huge market. I think most people stumble on to this site via reddit or some other forum and they're mostly curious about it. I think asking for money will drive most people away and change their thoughts from 'this looks kinda cool, I'll sign up' to 'what? they charge money for this? fuck that, I barely even know what this is.' That's how I think it would go anyway.
Donations? That should definitely be a thing, especially for those that have been around for years. Ian does a crazy amount of work and he's got long term plans for a stand alone website and sim engine. He doesn't have to do any of this and for the amount of time some of us spend here, I think asking for donations is totally fair.

I think having a little progress bar at the top of the page that shows if we've hit enough donations to at least pay for ad free proboards/domain on the site would give us all a reason to contribute a little bit. I almost joined a similar league that charged 50 bucks a year and gave out a monetary prize to everyone who made the playoffs. It operated off of a website and forum system. Not sure how they were simming as I didn't join (no teams available) but the idea of paying for something like this isn't unheard of.

I was just bring it up for awareness purposes, that's all. Youtube giving away 50 dollar gift cards is their choice, they can't deduct it on their taxes. However, if Jeremiah Hill receives the 50 dollar gift card, he is technically supposed to claim it as income. Also, it doesn't matter if Ian works 4,000 hours a year and makes $50 dollars off of a website - it's still taxable income and you can't offset it with labor hours from a hobby. Again, this is all speaking in nominal amounts that no one will report, but it is the law.
