dynasty5ive.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=freeagency&action=display&thread=16If we are going to have restrictions on how much we can offer to FAs I think it would be better if we know beforehand an estimate of how much is too much to offer for each player and some initial demands. Doing this for every FA sounds like a lot of work but it might not be so hard to do it only for requested FAs. Moreover, I believe there must be restrictions on FAs signings but I think they should apply mostly to prevent teams from signing average players to big long contracts. Personally, I don’t think Aaron Brooks best offer should have been reduced from $30M / 3 years to $12M / 2 years. I understand why the offer was reduced from 3 years to 2 years but $16M-$19M / 2 years for Brooks didn’t sound like a big deal to me. In real life a lot worse signings happen. I started this thread so we could discuss on the topic. Thoughts?

I think a cap for one player is important.

I think a cap for one player is important. Me too. The big question is how high that cap should be.

I don't think there should be a thread that shows what the cap is, because then everyone would be offering the same amount.

I don't think there should be a thread that shows what the cap is, because then everyone would be offering the same amount. Your point is valid. However, that cap should be a high number so in theory only really interested teams would offer that sort of money. Moreover, using that logic offering the cap is the same as offering a max deal because it will be automatically decreased to the cap salary.

I'd support a max salary per player. The NBA actually has something like this that bases it on the years the player has been in the league. www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q1625% of the year's cap if he's been in the league for 0-6 years, 30% if 7-9 and 35% for 10+. It's not as restrictive as what was imposed on Brooks, but at a maximum is a maximum. If a GM wants to sign a player to a long and restrictive contract, then good for him. let him take responsibility for his decisions.
