Current rating: 76 Suggested rating: 78
I'm going to compare him to a similar player who has the same OVR.
Amir Johnson: 28.8 MPG 10.4 PPG 59% 2pt FG% 56% FG% 6.6 RPG 1.5 APG 1.1 BPG .7 SPG 104 Drating (lower is better.)
Tristan Thompson: 31.6 MPG 11.7 PPG 47% 2pt FG% 47% FG% 9.2 RPG .9 APG .4 BPG .5 SPG 108 Drating (lower is better.)
Amir is clearly the better player here, both by stats and the eye test.
As a Cavs fan I've watched about 70 or so games each year of Tristan Thompsons career. Feel free to send me get well soon cards. Thompson is one of those bigs who takes like 3 players to gather for his shot. It's the reason he's never been above 50% from the 2. Although he scores 1 more ppg it's easily attributed to the 3-4 minutes a game he plays more than Amir. Tristan is a better rebounder true, but he loses a major advantage because he's more or less a no show on the defensive end losing in blocks steals and defensive rating. He also beats him in offensive rating.
I don't think it should pain anyone to get Amir up to being a great backup quality guy.

Both guys struggle at the line in the 65-69 range it's why I didn't mention it.

I'm a big Amir fan, I think a 78 is warranted. He's a solid defender as the stat shows, and he gets a block and close to a steal per game, and has been doing that for a bit. He takes smart shots for himself, doesn't hurt you there. I wish he rebounded a little tiny bit better but he's not bad there, just not excelling either. He'd be around 8.25 rebounds per 36 minutes which isn't all that good for a big man...but he's a good all-around player.
78.

I didn't read what you had to say, but, I will bring up what you said in the past about Harden and Defensive rating. You basically said that defensive rating is misleading because some players play with much better defenders making a poor defender look good.

I agree on that, again I think David Lee came in 20th for one of these defensive metrics...but opposite to Lee, Amir actually shows at least some defensive capability with over a block a game, close-ish to a steal a game, and a reputation for being at least a solid defender.

The reason I will refrain from rating Amir is the fact that I have no idea who he is and can't really say much about him. I don't even know what team he plays for IRL. Like I've stated in the past, I'm not much of an NBA fan.

Like I've stated in the past, I'm not much of an NBA fan. You're a numbers guy go by the numbers. Amir's steals and assists per game make up for the difference in rebounds. Big men should get blocks, Amir seems to do ok in that category, and Amir shoots well. You're asking for a 2 point raise? Sure, I'm not going to scream from the roof tops that it is blasphemy. 78, his numbers are better in my opinion than TT's.

looking at the numbers he really isnt that much better than TT. I understand how he defensively superior, though I havent seen him live too often, and shoots a better percentage but he gets significantly less rebounds. He is better than Tristan In blocks and steals though in points they are about equal considering their minutes. I think people are underestimating the importance of rebounds and I totally throwing out DRTG as its evaluation of David Lee couldn't be more wrong. Im going to go 76.

Hmm I think Amir is a better player than TT right now, but it's interesting that you chose to compare the two, because the stats kinda lean towards TT being at least even with Amir. I'll vote a 77. He's a good blocker, but I don't know if I would call him a good post defender. He can have some really good games, but he also has stretches where he doesn't do much for weeks in a row (he was on my fantasy team : He probably didn't benefit from being in a crowded Raptors frontcourt.
