From Bleacher Report: "Miami Heat shooting guard Victor Oladipo may reportedly miss the entire 2021-22 NBA season after Thursday's surgery on his right quadriceps tendon. "They haven't announced it, but there's a good chance Oladipo's gonna miss all of next season," ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported on Friday's edition of the Hoop Collective podcast." He has been out for 5 weeks already as well. Ian Noble

ACL doesn't heal in 6 weeks, right Ian Noble ? I know you would cream yourself if Kawhi is out, but it is still inconclusive: From the looks of things, Leonard received an MRI that was inconclusive, and needs more time for a clearer result. As of right now, Kawhi Leonard and the Clippers are hopeful that it's just an ACL sprain. The MRI can reveal more within the next couple of days, and that'll likely determine how long Kawhi Leonard will be out for.If its just a sprain, he could be back in 2 weeks. Obviously if its a tear then he's probably out for more than 6 weeks.

"Out indefinitely" players are assessed based on other websites reports of an injury or not included on the injury list until a more conclusive analysis is given. Basically we're waiting for more conclusive evidence.

When a player's real-life team is eliminated from competition and they opt for an end of season surgery they will not be added to the injury list at D5 unless, when the next season rolls around, they are still injured from the surgery.

Ok, here are the facts of the situation from what I can gather:
June 15 - Kawhi Leonard exits Game 4 vs Jazz with a knee injury June 16 - Shams reports that Kawhi has a knee sprain (note: this is the same thing as partially torn ACL) June 17 - Kawhi listed as DTD (would remain this way until June 29) June 19 - Chris Haynes reports that Kawhi is rehabbing at home and will not travel with team June 20 - Reggie Jackson says Kawhi is doing everything he can to return as soon as possible June 29 - CBS Sports says Kawhi is a game-time decision for Game 6 June 30 - Chris Haynes reports that Kawhi is still rehabbing and could be available for the NBA Finals June 30 - Chris Haynes reports that Kawhi not ruling out a return this postseason June 30 - Clippers are eliminated July 13 - Kawhi has surgery to repair partially torn ACL
So we have a situation here where a player was clearly not reported out for 6+ weeks during the playoffs, then his team gets eliminated, and he ends up having a surgery to repair his injury. It seems to me that the following rule applies:
When a player's real-life team is eliminated from competition and they opt for an end of season surgery they will not be added to the injury list at D5 unless, when the next season rolls around, they are still injured from the surgery.
For Kawhi to be out in D5, I think someone would need to provide definitive proof that the Clippers were lying and that the Haynes reporting was fabricated. That's the evidence we have right now, and the evidence points towards Kawhi working towards a return to play on his sprained ACL in the finals.

After many hours back and forth in Discord, Kawhi Leonard is now added to the injury list. Player Injuries- Players injured during the Playoffs will also have the severity of their injuries checked and if the recovery time of a player's injury would usually require them to miss 6 weeks of play they will be added to the injury list.
Kawhi suffered a torn ACL. Judging by all the other torn ACLs to NBA players I could find, including the list on this article, as well as more recent injuries to players like Klay Thompson and Jamal Murray, recovery time is longer than 6 weeks. edit: to add James Kay's reasoning from Discord

First time in D5 history we place someone who was listed DTD with a reported return timeline of 2-3 weeks on the IR.
First time in D5 history we interpret the rule to mean that we should not take into account official player status or credible reporting (Chris Haynes in this instance) over the player's specific situation.
Complete joke to make this decision on a top 5 player during the conference finals.

I mean you know the Clippers were just dragging their feet on announcing it to make teams "plan" for him - torn acls don't heal on their own for althletes. I guess modern technology couldn't detect it early on? Either way, above my pay grade. Cheers.

Haynes reported that there was a possibility of Kawhi returning to the finals, but you guys have concluded that Haynes’ phrasing left some ambiguity as to whether or not Kawhi would for certain return, which is obviously true, but is also the case with literally every other injury we’ve utilized reporting for in D5 history. Isn’t the possibility of returning 3 weeks after the injury pretty conclusive that he would not have been out for 6+ weeks? Isn’t the fact that he waited until after the finals to have the surgery confirming this narrative? What about the fact that he was officially listed as DTD by the Clippers and was being evaluated on a game by game basis? What about his teammates saying he was working to return? What about Kawhi himself continuing to play in the game where the injury occurred? We have all this evidence pointing in one direction (Kawhi was a possibility to play in finals), but we’ve somehow concluded that all that evidence is wrong or too ambiguous to conclude on. And so instead you link us to the typical return time for an ACL surgery, which is obviously more than 6 weeks, but that’s not at all the situation that we are evaluating. All signs point towards Kawhi foregoing surgery and possibly playing in the finals. To conclude otherwise is irrational.

I'm not on discord so here's my 2 cents.
I think the biggest thing for me is that we have a collection of players on our rosters that both make and don't make the playoffs in real life. The players that make the playoffs IRL obviously are at in increased risk of getting injured simply by playing more games (and often more minutes at higher intensity). But we shouldn't be punished for that. This places an unfair advantage towards teams with players that don't make the playoffs IRL. There are plenty of great players that didn't make the playoffs this year yet still played for our teams in our sim playoffs. Lavine, Zion, Curry, Fox, Towns, etc. Obviously if a player is injured during the regular season, he should be out here. However, a player out during the playoffs I think shouldn't be out in the sim due to not every player making the playoffs IRL. Hopefully that makes sense and sorry if someone has brought this up already. I haven't seen it discussed here

The only question that matters: do NBA players take longer than 6 weeks to recover from an ACL tear?
The answer is yes, so stop making me waste my time.
