D5 Worst Contracts - 2020 Criteria: Length: How long is the contract? Girth: How large is the contract? Curvature: Is the player getting better or worse? Enlargement: Is the contract increasing or decreasing? 1 87 LaMarcus Aldridge - $35,654,150 - $35,654,150 - $35,654,150 - $35,654,150The Aldridge contract meets all of the criteria on the list. It's long, girthy, enlarging, and with a downward curvature. Aldridge is already 34 years old and recently got a stockwatch to decrease to around an 84. He seems like a player who will age gracefully, but with the 4th year on this deal, this contract is virtually unmoveable and puts a huge damper on the 76ers future. 2 78 Enes Kanter - $32,139,329 - $35,674,655 - $39,598,867For what Kanter lacks in length compared to Aldridge, he makes up for in enlargement. Already down to a 78 rating and relegated to a deep bench player, the Curvature it bleak for Kanter. Luckily though, it seems Chauncey Billups is content to let Kanter ride out his deal on his bench, especially with the deal ending before the team needs to re-sign Ayton. 3 85 Chris Paul - $40,000,000 - $40,450,000 - $40,800,000Perhaps the girthiest contract in D5, Chris Paul has been on the move quite a lot this season. Working in CP3's favor though, is his recent resurgence on the real-life Thunder. It seems like Paul will maintain an 85ish rating for the duration of his deal, making this slightly less bad than the Kanter contract. 4 82 Otto Porter - $27,377,294 - $29,287,338 - $31,197,382Otto has been dealing with injuries in real life, which is protecting his 82 rating in D5 and masking the fact that he looks like he completely forgot how to play basketball once being traded to the real-life Bulls. The D5 Magic are already in hard-cap territory, and paying $30m to someone who is going to be hard-pressed to maintain an 80 rating might hinder the team from even taking the next step towards being a real title contender. 5 85 CJ McCollum - $27,377,294 - $29,287,338 - $31,197,382 - $33,107,426 There's quite a few competitors for this 5th spot, including Robert Covington and Harrison Barnes. With similar girth, curvature, and enlargement, but as the only of those three with a 4th year on his deal, I decided to give the spot to McCollum based on length. McCollum is probably slightly better than those two, but not by much. Players with his skillset are becoming a dime a dozen, and typically are not being rated around an 85, especially with his defense and shooting stats. With a handful of other large contracts, and a Giannis player option looming, the Rockets need to be careful that McCollum's contract doesn't soon become a liability.

What’s your Theta D here? Don’t see that in the criteria for selection lol

www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q54I'm fairly certain we've been using compounded raises lol. From the CBA FAQ: 54. Are raises compounded? In other words, is each raise a percentage of the previous year's salary? No. Raises are limited to a percentage of the base salary in the first season of the contract. Raises in extensions are based on a percentage of the base salary in the first season of the extension. If a team signs another team's free agent (5% maximum raises) to a four-year contract starting at $10 million, the maximum raise is $500,000 each year.

Well in D5 all raises, whether BRs or not, are limited to 7.5% (though apparently we are also erring in compounding these raises). IRL, BRs teams can offer up to 8% raises, while non-BRs can only offer 5%. 7.5% seems like something of a compromise I guess.

I am waiting for Tom's comment about this. Of course it's bullshit and I'm not convinced Josh didn't do this on purpose considering our private conversations, so I wasn't intending on commenting. There are plenty of contracts worse than CJ McCollum - a 28 year old SG who puts up good numbers and where the max value of his contract will be $33M when he's 32 and the salary cap could well be above $120M. He's been completely balling out with Lillard out, too. The fact he would make this list over Barnes, Draymond Green, Gary Harris, Robert Covington, Brook Lopez, Aaron Gordon, Kyle Lowry, etc. is pretty insane. Especially considering Josh's initial advice to me was to trade Kemba Walker for CJ McCollum because of his good contract. I feel crazy, but I also feel like people here just target me because they want me to lose Giannis so they can grab him. Some people here are just snakes. The more attention I give to issues like this the more back blow I get so I'm trying to ignore these things... Which I realize I'm failing at. I don't feel a good sense of community here lately and I'm probably (definitely) taking things too seriously and personally - but I'm also getting fed up because I think if I didn't have Giannis some of this wouldn't be happening.

We no longer use compounding raises, at least that's the official answer. Realistically though, I have no idea when Ian Noble changed the wording in the rules because years ago we definitely used compounding raises. I think we all got so used to calculating it that way that many recent contracts have probably been compounded when they shouldn't have been. I can remember correcting a few as player agent, but I also can remember after the fact seeing incorrect raises being signed.

I did suggest looking into a Kemba for CJ swap, but that was before I realized how CJ was struggling this year

Yeah I mean I'm not going to go digging through FA signings but at least Brogdon was signed with compound raises. I don't recall any announcement about it either tbh.

"struggling" in D5 apparently means consistency
McCollum has been putting up nearly identical stats 3 years in a row 🤷🏻♂️

Bad contract obviously, but if you compare to Otto Porter Jr he is just a year older and at least he plays. Also has better stats despite his overall being 3 points worse.

McCollum has been putting up nearly identical stats 3 years in a row 🤷🏻♂️ Look, this is just a fun article I wrote with my own opinions. I've probably done 100 similar articles like this over the history of D5. Yea, CJ is still putting up 20 ppg, but he has completely changed as a player (settling for jumpers instead of attacking the basket). Just browse the Blazers subreddit for 5 minutes and you'll see who they blame for being out of the playoffs, or alternatively look at any sort of advanced stats, it's pretty clear that the tides have turned on CJ this year: 2019/20:ORtg 109 / DRtg 117 BPM 0.4 VORP 1.2 WS/48 .069 TS .537 PER 16.6 FTr .123 2018/19:ORtg 113 / DRtg 113 BPM 1.0 VORP 1.8 WS/48 .114 TS .553 PER 17.0 FTr .154 2017/18:ORtg 108 / DRtg 109 BPM 1.2 VORP 2.3 WS/48 .108 TS .536 PER 17.0 FTr .166 My point in this article is that there's a lot of guys in the league now who can you give what CJ gives you, but for a much more friendly contract. I didn't include anyone who has less than 3 years left on this list, because their contracts really aren't too burdensome anymore. If I compare CJ to guys like Covington and Barnes, whom I expressly mentioned in the article, they all are similarly talented IMO but CJ has one extra year on his contract, which is why I included him instead of those guys.

The more attention and energy I spend defending my players just causes me more frustration. CJ is a ball dominant guard who plays next to Damien Lillard. The Blazers as a team have decreased and been plagued with injuries. Dame is having a career year and they're barely in the playoff hunt after making the WCF last year. This isn't CJs fault, they're just struggling overall. Which is why they went out and got Melo.
I mean look at the advanced numbers you posted. They're basically the same! Some of this year is higher than previous years too

Offensive rating 2020 > 2018 Defensive rating 2020 > 2019 > 2018 TS% 2020 > 2018 And the rest of these are miniscule differences. I'm sick of defending my players. I should have done what people actually want when a new GM joins - sell everything for cheap and start it all over. Every post about my team mentions Giannis.

Also... you know you want Defensive rating to be lower right? His Drtng has plummeted since 2018. I'm not attacking CJ lol I was just responding to your specific claim that some had gotten better. Actually, I didn't know that - TIL.
But in any case, I'd still rather pay CJ over Barnes and others throughout the league. I want Dame back ASAP, but I'm also liking what I'm seeing from him putting the Blazers on his back
