Well Chris Paul will be 36 years old taking up 40M dollars when Giannis is up for another contract, so, I don't see how this benefits the Rockets ability to retain Giannis.
That being said, CP3 has been playing much better than Conley this season and if this is paired with some other moves, the Rockets oculd at least contend in the short-term.
For Toronto, the East is so crowded, this is good planning to ditch that extra 40M in salary.

I’m with James Kay here that short term this works, but that Giannis decision is looming after next season and an old CP3 (who beyond consistent Point God play is always good for at least one injury a season) on the books for nearly $41 MM might be a big deterrent to staying.

Chris Paul will be 37 when that time comes. He might retire by that time.

"You need to make Houston competitive or Giannis will want to leave!" "Trading Conley for a much better Chris Paul will make Giannis want to leave!" Listen guys - I don't believe Giannis is going anywhere after his next contract. I just can't see it happening. Anything is of course possible, and I have to prepare for that possibility, but if we make Houston into a top team, with his bird rights locked in, I don't see how he bounces. I'm more concerned about his contract after his next one. In any case, Chris Paul is far outplaying Conley. Literally everyone who went after Conley wanted me to give him away, usually with myself including picks too. So getting a much better Chris Paul to immediately make us more competitive in the weak West, only needing to pay him one extra year than Conley, and grabbing Valentine and 2 picks in the process, made it seem like a pretty good move overall.

No doubt it's risky taking on the CP3 contract but Houston needs an upgrade and doesn't have many assets. Chris has been his usual point God self this season too. He could age like Stockton
Also the rockets get to move off the toxic Conley contract.
Its a clever move imo

Raptors get to leave CP3 contract 1 year earlier since both are bad contracts.
