Now I know this doesn’t help Elton Brand‘s efforts to tank away and add another PG to his roster through the 2020 draft that can’t pass or shoot, but Jayson Tatum needs some attention. Dude has been a rock durability wise (started 80 games his rookie year, 79 last year, 41/41 this year) and has just steadily improved each season. He’s up to 21.5 PPG this year (up from 15.7 PPG last season), 6.9 RPG (also up), 2.8 APG (up again), and adding a nice 2.2 STOCKS (1.4 SPG and 0.8 BPG) for the Celtics. He’s doing this all on decent shooting splits (44% FG/36% 3 PM (on almost 7 attempts a game)/84% FT). He’s also upped his PER, is sporting some decent Win Shares (3.5 and .121/48), and is actually slight positives on both Offensive and Defensive BPM. He’s definitely maturing as a player, and is just 21 still with some serious playoff experience under his belt already.
If there are drawbacks to Tatum, you’d wish he didn’t settle for some of those Josh Smith/DeRozan long 2s still, and his finishing at the rim for a crafty player still leaves something to be desired, but he’s turning into a very nice two way player who, unlike his two way teammate Jaylen Brown, offensively could be an elite three level scorer in time while still holding his own with his length defensively.
