Portland Trailblazers Open! The Portland Trailblazers are looking for a new GM! Previous GM: Brandon Roy gave the D5 Blazers three years of service. You have up to one month to show the Hiring Committee you're up to the job of leading the Blazers!
What are we looking for before we appoint you as Blazers GM? Engagement and Activity
Someone who can show they will be an active member of Dynasty Five for a long time, to make the Blazers their own and build a great dynasty and to understand that it will be a job that will take many years! We want someone who wants to become part of the semi-roleplaying atmosphere of being a real NBA GM here at D5, who gets involved in rating players, day-to-day discussion and even posts media centre articles such as rankings, jersey switches, analytics, scouting reports or stories.
Knowledge
The Blazers roster is in a difficult place right now: not good enough to compete for a championship, but not really able to tank and rebuild due to possessing only two of their own first round draft picks over the next 4 years! With 2/3rds of the Blazers salaries taken up by their star duo of DeMar DeRozan and Kyle Lowry it will take a lot of time, patience, hard work and good decision making to turn this franchise around! The shrinking hard cap is putting pressure on some of the best teams in the league, so maybe exploiting that situation would be an avenue to explore first? Don't be afraid to ask questions if you're not sure how the league functions!
Former Raptors stars, DeRozan and Lowry, headline the current Blazers roster. How to Apply ***Reply to this thread to introduce yourself***
Explain your experience with NBA basketball, which team you support, where you live etc. Possibly explain your plans for the Blazers if you were to take over as GM. If you don't have a GM name already, choose a name that's not been taken already Keep active as outlined above
Also have a read of What is Dynasty Five? After the Hiring Committee has seen enough we will meet to decide who gets hired for the job! note: even if you miss out on this team, showing you're a committed, hard working GM will put you first in line for any future team openings and ahead of everyone else on the waiting list.

Hey everybody! Izzo here to put my name in the hat for the Blazerd. Most of you know me because I've been around here for a while waiting for a team. I was the interim Pistons GM while my brother was away at basic training.
I live in Hawaii, just finished up visiting my old friend Josh Barber at his home in Sweden, and have been in leagues since 2005. I was the Pistons GM on nbagmleague.proboard.com back in the day, created a few leagues myself, co-created some leagues with Josh, and have been an avid basketball fan since I was a wee teenager. Me and Josh have also dabbled in NBA blog websites when we were in college. My love for the NBA is unmatched!
My plan for the Blazers would be to test the market for Derozan and Lowry and start a rebuild. We wouldn't own our own pick next year, which is frustrating, but we could work through it. The list of rebuilding teams is long, and I'm not interested in taking forever. I'd like to dive in and obtain some young prospects and build a winning culture to attract some free agents. We aren't likely to get the big stars, so emulating my childhood team Pistons rosters might be the way to go with a great supporting cast, or get lucky with some draft picks.
In any case, I'd be thrilled with the chance to run the Blazers and get more heavily involved in D5 again!

I'll wait a bit to learn more about these sim leagues before applying for an open position, there are certainly others more deserving and capable then myself as of right now

Hey, I would be interested also. Have been running (fittingly ) the Trailblazers in D720 for few years now, where I have experience of building a contender from a rebuilding team. And with the first look the Trailblazers here also need some serious moves to get good again. I wouldn't mind managing a team that takes few years to get better. I'm a basketball nerd and a Spurs fan from Finland. Spend way too much time in looking stats of some random players, when I should be working Generally really active as GM, an I'm currently running D720 sims after Billy stepped down. Last year I did also do the "test GM" process for Jazz GM here, if that makes any difference. Let me know if you want to know more Theodore Duncan
Edit. Since there is already Tim Duncan, I think I would choose Arvydas Sabonis as my GM name

Hey guys, most of you already know me but for those who don't I'm Jerry West, Assistant GM of the Indiana Pacers. And I'm officially applying for the Portland Trailblazers GM position. So to start off maybe I'll explain a little bit more about myself. I'm a 22 years old man from Portugal. Despite the lack of the popularity of the sport around here at the time (fortunately is picking up more mainstream appeal recently), I started playing basketball at 8 years old back when I didn't even know what the NBA was. I played it since up until today, despite the fact that I had to "retire" at the age of 16 due to a knee injury very similar to Brandon Roy funny enough. During that time I managed to even make some teams on the district level (best player from certain regions of the country) and basketball was a big part of my life so I was really let down by that, and that's when I started giving more attention to the NBA despite already following it since 2009 when I was 13. After a year break, I eventually took a ref course and called some games for 2 years and some times work at the scorer table including for the Women's 1st Division at the age of 17. Right now since I'm in college and working part-time I had to give that up and only go give some basketball classes at my old club from time to time. About my NBA knowledge, the first NBA game I watched it 29-12-2009. I was on the Winter vacation from school and stayed up late to watch a game on a sports channel. That game was Celtics vs Clippers. Baron Davis hit a fadeaway 2 as the buzzer sounded over Rondo. It was fucking cool as it can be, so I became a Clippers fan. Later on, we would trade Baron Davis to the Cavs alongside the pick who turned into Kyrie Irving, dumbest move ever made by the franchise, funny how things work. I've checked at least the NBA scores every day from that one forward, catching up to any games when I had the time. And at 16 it almost became my obsession to the point that I started keeping up with college basketball. Fun fact, last year I ranked in the Top 100 of NBA.com draft challenge, where you had to predict the Top 14 picks, that's how addicted I am. Jerome Robinson to the Clippers killed my mock draft funnily enough. About my experience with Sim leagues, this is honestly the first one I'm a part of. And of course that should impact the decision, but I like to think that Larry Bird has been a low-key candidate for Executive of the year. Yes, our team is underperforming and were unlucky with Andre Roberson situation who I think we got on a great deal despite all things. But you can go as far as you want in this season where we have made a total of 7 trades, and I ask you to point out one trade that was bad for us or that it didn't make sense for the team current position. A team that was loaded with long contracts and short on draft picks now has one of the best drafts picks in the league (Blazers 22) alongside getting multiple other picks while retaining our own, and also as of now only has Val under a big contract in 20-21, other than him it's all cap space and rookie deals on a team with promising pieces like Jarret Allen, Bobby Portis, Josh Hart, Taurean Prince and Ivica Zubac, 3 of them who were acquired this season alongside other good players like Lin or Bojan Bogdanovic. And obviously most of the work was Larry, but I like to think I was part of those processes and that helped him achieve a team that is in a position that we can be proud of and confident for the future. Now about my contributions about D5, I like to think my monthly Power Rankings are a fun read for everyone and that adds a little bit of realism for you guys instead of being in just another Sim league, if we can have anything like Media articles it makes the league more fun for everyone who is a part of it and easier to understand for the new guys who might want to join or be part of it in any other way. I'm also an active user and try to help as much as possible on the ratings (although I won't comment if I don't know the player well enough) and from time to time will comment on the games and check for new records D5 along to participating in other threads and votes. I also have a journal on the Pacers section that with time I'll keep adding things to it. About the Blazers, well it can't get much worse than this can it? Here's what I wrote about the Blazers in December: The Blazers have an above average 2, maybe GM Brandon Roy can make the case that they an above average 3 with Tristan Thompson. Hell, maybe he'll make a comeback and make it an above average 4. Maybe that will get them into playoff contention, but right now, the Blazers are the odd team out in the West playoff race. Without a pick to trade, no firsts or seconds, Portland isn't in a place to rebuild, but at the same time, they aren't good enough to compete despite having one of the best backcourts in the league. With the team already at the cap next season despite multiple expiring contracts, including Tristan Thompson, and their best young player being Donte DiVincenzo, Portland might have the darkest future in the league. That hurts to read now that I'm applying for the spot. So how do I think I can turn this around? One word? Patience. Look I could sit here and tell you how great the Blazers will be in 2 years but they won't. I'm sure Brandon was already shopping DeMar and Lowry, and yet he has not made a single move. It doesn't take a genius to know that this happened due to a lack of interest from the other teams. So what's my plan? Well, my plan is to get as many as draft picks as possible even if 2nds and use the MLE and whatever sort of cap space I have to get players I believe who have potential or trade value with the appeal of a place where they might start and up their value while also playing in front of some of the most passionate and louder fans in the league on a historical franchise who already had a couple of Hall of Fame players pass through it. To finish everything off I would like to thank these people in particular: Ian Noble : For posting on Deep Fried D5 Memes (a place where I contributed with some SpongeBob memes as well) for posting an archer Meme that I quote: "Do you want to be the first in line for the next team? Because that's how you get first in line for the next team" with the caption: MRW Jerry West keeps posting amazing D5PN Articles and insights. Shaquille O'Neal : For posting in one of my Power Rankings saying "Give him a team already! 😂" Jeremiah Hill and everyone who liked the post: For saying and I quote: "I'm not looking forward to Jerry getting his own team. Based on this deal I'd have to say he'd be a major player." Real recognize real Jeremiah, thank you. And last but not least to Larry who I hope who comes back soon for being my mentor in D5. And with that I bid my goodbye to you, I mean not literally because even I don't become a GM I'll still be around but you get the point.

Hey guys,
I know I'm not necessarily the first GM in line, but I'd like to throw my name in anyways.
My dynasty basketball experience started in 2015, where I was a GM in a 30 team dynasty fantasy basketball league. After winning the championship, the league folded during the offseason. Billy King was a member in that league and offered me a team in 720. I have been the GM of the Phoenix Suns in 720 every since (and even a GM in the 720 summer leagues). My Suns team started out with a young Bradley Beal, an aging Jamal Crawford and not a lot else. From that, I was able to slowly build a perennial title contender that lost in the finals in 7 games last season (without the reigning league MVP Gordon Hayward). I have tried to build my team to be a winner now, but also viable and interesting for the future. I rarely trade my 1st round picks and I love the NBA Draft. I would apply a similar mindset to the Trailblazers, although they may require a little more work.
I've been very active in 720 for the past few years, as I have been a member of the trade committee, written lengthy offseason predictions and been a player agent. Here, I've been a bit more of a lurker, as I've tried to learn the nuances of the league, but I check in multiple times a day. No worries about inactivity from me!
Brian hired me as his assistant GM for the Pelicans a few months back and I have been happy helping him out. He hired me because we have a similar perspective on team building and he wanted to bolster his scouting for the draft.
The Trailblazers need a lot of work and even more patience. As my history has shown, I think I am capable of taking on the challenge if you guys decide. Focusing on the long term, acquiring assets and being patient would be my approach for the Trailblazers. The lack of picks makes things challenging, but a lot of expiring contracts and a few good players makes them a great candidate for a reset.
If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. It's been a pleasure being a member here so far.
Steve

Hello all Im going to be applying for the portland trail blazers postion! I am currently the suns assistant gm, as well as the minnesota timberwolves owner on d720! Im 37 and from wisconsin so im a huge bucks fan!!!!! Im actually making my plans for my 2nd annual chase the bucks live during the playoffs lol even though im from milwaukee i have lived in atlanta since 2000 but still have family up north so i attend almost all bucks playoff games home and away like i have been doing since the big 3 era! Hopefully this year i wont have to see them lose a game 7 live like i did last year 😥 So i love basketball and so do my 6 sons! Its life in are household! In d720 i transformed a team that has never made the playoffs to a team that will be making the playoffs for a 2nd straight year and a record of 73-44 over the time i have been their gm!! As far as the portland team, i would definitely take advantage of teams trying to get below the salary cap, as well as trying to collect as many draft picks as possible to hopefully hit on a couple but i would not break the core of lowry, and derozan up unless a deal came by to good to pass up! I would def be focussing on getting the right guy for portland in this years draft as they dont have their picks next year so we have to try and stay in contention while also making stealth rebuild moves alot like i did with the timberwolves im currently the gm of in d720. Im also a highly active and desired owner who whether i get the job or not have already started writing up for the upcoming draft that includes my personal big board as well as a mock draft after final postioning by the ping pong balls! A write up i started doing bc the suns organization has so many upcoming picks this year and next to help rebuild that team! I am also being treated for colon cancer which was caught early and im hoping will be in remission next time i see the doctor as ive been kicking cancers ass just like i kicked ass in the military and i will kick ass making sure the blazers organization gets back to the top of the mountain one day!! I hope i will be considered but also i am thrilled to just be apart of such a special league like d5!! Thanks 4 the consideration!

Amare StoudemireArvydas SabonisSteve NashJerry WestTom IzzoThere are so many good candidates here. It's quite humbling to read all your posts. I wish we had a position for all of you! The Selection Process: You will be allowed to propose trades, and post them in the Trade section, on behalf of the Blazers from now until the selection process ends. Only one of the candidates will be successful in the process and their posted trades can be accepted and finalized afterwards.
The selection process will not last longer than a month, in fact it's most likely not going to take even half that amount of time, but it will continue until the Hiring Committee thinks we're done.
You will not only be judged on your trades whilst the selection process continues; your general engagement with the league and the sum of your past previous activities as a D5 member will be taken into account.
As a message to the candidates - you don't have to post a trade to get the job. It would be much better to post no trade at all than a trade which exhibits lack of planning or foresight. I've alerted the rest of the league what's happening in this thread. If any other GMs are confused that you're offering them Portland players just link them to that thread. Good luck everyone! I wish we could keep you all on board, but alas - there can only be one!

Amare StoudemireArvydas SabonisSteve NashTom IzzoHi guys, Jerry West has withdrawn himself from the selection process! And to be honest, with his previous and continuing contributions he was leading the pack in the eyes of the committee! We're still unsure who comes top so the process is still continuing, hopefully someone will step up and make the difference soon. Good luck all, Ian

Hey Arvydas here. I was previously Greg Ostertag due to the process for applying for Jazz, but asked admin to change the name, which he agreed.
Unfortunately I have been super busy at work for the last few weeks so I haven't been really participating in this process here as I originally hoped. Not that I think that it will be possible to find the best possible trade to start rebuilding Blazers right now anyways and much better options for deals will be there in time of the draft and offseason.
Not that being busy should be used as excuse, but I have to also say that my motivation to do this trial period again is pretty low. Last year applying for Jazz I spend a ton of time trying to work many deals, participating in the forums and in the end Elton Brand got selected. He surely deserved it, but at least Ian wrote this thing below, which gave hope for future.
And then when Spurs opened up it was directly given to George Gervin... mmokay, not really what was promised but at least I would be next in line for the following team. That obviously didn't now happen, and I can also understand the reason. When there are very active assistant GM's waiting for a team, it would not be very fair towards them if next open team is given to someone from outside. But that made it also clear already at start of this process that Silva would be clear frontrunner just based on his activity on last months. As it would be hardly likely to find some super trade that would distinguish yourself from other candidates. Some post in span of few weeks would hardly overcome that advantage of being active for longer time.
Not sure what is my reason to write this post other than giving some feedback for the process. I think you either need to make clear that being an assistant and active member of forums already before a team opens up is requirement to get that open team, or just choose someone as new GM based on their proven experience and activity on other sim-leagues and/or recommendations from current GM's. As this process is now, I think it only weeds out bad candidates and can't make difference between good ones

Fair points Arvydas Sabonis This is a new system we've got going here, it's only been used three times before, like most of the systems at D5 it evolves over time until we're happy with it and I realise it's not perfect. Having a previous repertoire as strong as Jerry West's definitely gives candidates an automatic lead against others, but then that could maybe serve as motivation to contribute more actively as an assistant, or even as just someone who likes to participate in the league, before any new teams open and selection processes begin. By the same token though - if someone else manages to blow us away with an amazing trade then that would shake up the whole process. I know you raised some other points there but I have to leave the house right now, I'll maybe try be more thorough in my reply later

These candidates will not continue: Arvydas SabonisSteve NashSorry guys, we just don't feel like there's been enough happening from your end.

This has been a long and difficult process. Amare Stoudemire showed us excellent levels of activity and enthusiasm, Tom Izzo has GM'd the Pistons for months in Chauncey Billups's absence, but in the end I personally pursued the only candidate who stood head and shoulders above the competition and asked him to reconsider his choice. I'm therefore happy to announce that Jerry WestWill be taking the reins in Portland after all! Thank you to all the candidates: Amare Stoudemire, Tom Izzo, Arvydas Sabonis and Steve Nash. I hope you all apply again, you're all worthy of a GM position and I hope you all stick around and/or return when the next job opening comes along! Congratulations though to Jerry West!! Welcome to the Portland Trailblazers organisation! May your reign be long and prosperous!
