ACCEPTED by the Spurs. Our guards under contract right now consist of the newly drafted Luka Doncic and oft injured Derrick Rose. Our team saw value in adding Rondo to the fold as a reliable PG who still won’t be anywhere near enough to alter our ambitions of tanking for a top selection in the next two drafts. His contract is also very team friendly, presenting an opportunity down the road should a contender need backcourt depth where, provided we have a PG of the future on the roster, he may recoup some trade value.
Additionally, while we realize two selections are being traded— a late selection in the 2nd round and a future 2nd— which seems contrary to our rebuilding efforts, unfortunately with 7 picks in this draft and three more in the next two, it would’ve presented situations where we can’t sign all the players we’ve drafted. As a GM I don’t want to go through the effort of scouting and drafting to be hamstrung by the roster constraints. Regardless of the stretch provisions in place to waive players, I’d rather trade two picks that will likely be roster cuts if they were still in the fold for the assurance of 8 players drafted over the next three drafts being secure on the roster.
