This Free Agent class lacks star power in the PG department. However there are still solid guards available mainly for teams looking to upgrade their bench. Also rebuilding teams might take on young PGs who havent really established themselves.
This article is a collab piece made by Jerry West and myself.Feel free to leave your opinions below.
1.Elfrid Payton
Elfrid Payton might be one of the most interesting players in what is a star-lacking Free Agency field. The number one Point Guard on our board has been around in the NBA, passing trough Orlando, Phoenix and the Pelicans during his short-career.
Despite that, this year was a step forward for Payton despite missing half the season due to injury. After starting the season hot and being a constant triple-double threat Payton managed to do something historical after coming back, joining the elite company of Russel Westbrook, Michael Jordan, Oscar Robertson and Will Chamberlain has the only players to get 5 triple-doubles in a row.
At only 24 years old, this contract might be one who runs trough his prime, so look for him to get paid after averaging 11-8-5 in the NBA.
Unfortunately, that might not be with the Hawks who already have Fox and Lonzo. Expect Philadelphia, Brooklyn and Memphis to be the favorites. The lack of cap space this year might make him go underpaid, but at the same time the lack of good FA’s might up the bidding war for him.
2.Jeff Teague
The 30 year old guard is one of the few starting caliber guards of this FA class.Despite having a dip in shooting efficiency,he s still valuable due to his playmaking and a good AST/TO ratio of 3.5.If the Bucks have his Bird Rights then they should definitely re-sign him.
3.Isaiah Thomas
Isaiah Thomas will never go back to be the player he used to be, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a value has a veteran who can score from the bench. Him being number 3 on our board just shows how bad this year Point Guard market is. Despite that potential for him to slightly revive his career is still there, and someone will take that risk.
If I had to guess I would bet on him joining a contender on a short long-term deal. Boston, Nuggets, Miami and the Magic might be the teams who make more sense to add IT to the roster.
4.Seth Curry
The lesser know Curry brother is also a sniper from distance with 45% shooting from 3 which ranks 3rd in the league. This kind of shooting is extremely valuable in this era of spacing and makes him a great backup PG which puts him 4th in this list.It doesn’t make sense for the Lakers to sign him given that they are trying to trade their best player in Conley so expect Seth to join a playoff bound team and light it up from the bench.
5.Ish Smith
Solid player off the bench and is arguably the best PG for Detroit in the NBA. At 30 years old he still brings value to good teams. Houston won’t have the full MLE unless they reject Bazemore so expect Ish to move towns.
A team like the Bucks who already have enough scoring on the bench and would rather add a playmaker makes sense for him.
6.Dante Exum
After being the 5th pick in the 2014 NBA draft, his career has been plagued with injuries which is restricting him from reaching his full potential. If NOLA fails to sign some win now players to pair with Hayward then they should offer Exum a deal which shouldn’t be a lot considering his injury history which will be a low risk high reward deal considering his potential.
7. Shabazz Napier
At 27 years old Napier had a career year with the Nets despite sitting behind Russel and Dinwiddie. If the Raptors manage to keep their core together I wouldn’t be surprised to see Napier return to them.
He might be the hidden gem of the Point Guard class.
8.Matthew Dellavedova
Once dubbed as the Curry Stopper,Dellavedova is still a hustle player which is a great quality to have. The Aussie has got an increased role in the NBA with the Cavs this season but stats on tanking teams are hard to judge. In the Memphis roster,Dellavedova is expendable due to their influx of guards.
9.Jose Barea
Barea enters this list despite his season-ending injury since a team might be able to sign him for the minimum. And that’s great value despite his age. I would expect him to remain with the Hornets since they are a contending team and already has the advantage of being their current team.
10.Trey Burke
Burke is the last name on this list.He is a serviceable player but expect him to go for a bit more than the minimum due to him not being that efficient,.
The Heat doesn’t have a need for Burke so I don’t think they should re-sign him.
