Trae has been better than I thought he'd be, at least after his godawful start to the season, but that's not a high bar to get over because I honestly believed he'd shoot under 40% from the floor. So that makes his 41.1% an overachievement imo, but like, that still sucks.
He's just not actually that good of a shooter right now. A fair amount of that comes down to terrible shot selection, but even considering that, you can't really call him elite. He's an exciting shooter more than he's a good shooter. That's just not acceptable for him when his offense is supposed to overcome his defense and more.
Steve Nash made up for his bad defense by being otherworldly on offense, both his playmaking and shooting efficiency. He was one of the most efficient players in the history of the NBA. You could rename the 50/40/90 club the Steve Nash club. Does anyone believe Trae can achieve that?
Eventually he's not going to be able to fool around on a bad team that nobody expects to win any games. He will eventually have expectations, and he needs to figure his shit out before then or his career arc will look like Brandon Jennings.
There's some potential with him, but he has a very long way to go. I'm still baffled the Hawks chose him over Luka Doncic.

Why are we comparing 20 year old Trae with Steve Nash? lmao Because the video? It's also just the idea that if you suck at defense, you have to be equally good on offense, and then some. Nash is an example of a guy like that. If people think Trae can become a star, then based on his skillset, he kind of has to follow in the footsteps of Nash and Curry. What other choice does he have? He can't play like Westbrook or Chris Paul or something. His physical attributes are what they are.

I mean the profile for him was interesting on offense who might have trouble shooting over people and being dog shit on defense. If anything he's fitting that perfectly.
